To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
Very easy to get it installed and started up. Not easy at all to configure it the way I wanted it to be. All I needed is a simple NAS with raid 1 setup for file backup.
Oh boy, it took me two days and lots of document/webpage reading to get it setup in SHR mode. I still don't know if RAID 1 is possible or not on my 220j. And to transfer existing data from other disks to this box, where can I find information on this thing?
I felt I'd need a IT team to figure out how to make full use of it. Lots of functions are useless to me.
Cannot we document the procedure of some popular setups somewhere easy to find?
This is my second Synology NAS. The other one was over 8 years old and still working well, but I don't trust old hardware with my files. So I upgraded to this one. New one is faster, and all the built in applications that run via a web browser are really great. I particularly liked the utility to copy files from an external USB drive to the NAS. That saved me hours. I highly recommend this NAS for home or a small business.
I use this diskstation for six months with no issue at all. It is my cloud, I manage it, I maintain it with minimum knoldge. During the set up, please read carefully the instruction provided by the manufacturer. Thus you should not be in trouble. I have access to all my information from anywhere. It gave me really freedom. I got get ride of memory sticks. Anytime, anywhere, if I need my data it is right available for me. I put 1 TB + 500GB hard-disks in it. During last six months, the station was working 24/7. No problem so far. The only problem that you may encounter is the bandwidth of your internet provider that it is not an issue for this diskstation. I did not used streaming (video or audio), because I did not need it then I have no comments on that issue.
I am new to consumer level NAS so it did take me some learn curve to set it up. Once it is setup, I can just leave it alone to do its job. The only concern is there is not expansion for RAM which limits its usability. It is inline with the price point of a beginner NAS. I might consider to move up to next level of NAS in future once I learn how to use it.
Pros : Lots of great software for customization. Cons : Lots of software configuration to figure out and the hardware is on the slow side.
It worked and was easy setup without problems. For the price it is great and does the job of letting me backup computers on home network on a RAID. The browser presented interface and software is pretty good (I have only used a bit of software so far). It was easy to setup password protected "drives" for different family members and assign storage quotas. Works fine as a music server, but seems a bit weak as a video server (as expected based on specs) but works fine for DVD quality stuff. A more powerful costlier unit would fix this, and give me 4 disk bays, but I mainly I wanted a RAID for backup and a music server at a good price - and it meets those requirements well. Rather than getting a 4 drive unit at almost x2 the cost I'll probably just get another 2 bay unit with latest hardware if I need another 2 drives. So far it has been running for 12 days no problems at all.
I was looking for a good quality back-up I could just plug into a USB port, but it came as a WIFI network backup device with HUGE capability far more than I needed. That made it really complex to set up but I persisted through the documentation that does require previous knowledge. Fortunately I like learning how to do these things, but let me tell you, motivation is required.
I never did figure out how to set it up with a fixed IP so i don't have to re-connect after power outages, but that's ok. it's working great!
It's easy to set up this product, and very stable. I have used a WD My Cloud product as a home file server. I changed my old one to this because the old one is unstable now. This is fast and stable, and it provides RAID, too. Yes, this is more expensive than the My Cloud product, but I think it deserves to invest.
It is rare to find good software with good devices. Usually one or the other gives, if not both. Synology really has a great product offering. I read my tech articles, reviews and recommendations. I am very happy with this unit, I hope it lasts me a number of years.
