How you configure it will determine performance but out of the box without added RAM and 4 x 6tb Seagate Iron Wolf hard drives in a RAID 10 configuration, this NAS is very responsive.
The DSM software that comes with it is a joy to use and has loads of features to turn it into a mail server, vpn server, CRM server and a plethora of other features. It'll even backup your 365 account (it won't backup a business oneDrive account if it's associated with Sharepoint).
Encryption is possible but shared, encrypted drives tend to dismount and need re-mounting unless you add a USB stick to act as a key manager.
I've been installing and configuring Synology NAS devices for about 7 years now and this is a very smart option if huge storage isn't an issue.

I ordered this as a cheap home NAS. Little did I know the rich feature set I was getting. I was originally going to get a netgear (which may be good -- I didn't get it so who can say) but I don't regret my choice here. I was concerned at first that this was only an 8-bay, but soon found that with 14TB drives this was more than enough for my home needs.
Pros:
- So many add-on packages. I've virtually replaced all my home servers and just run apps right off this.
- Works well for Plex, Web Server, DNS, IScsi, etc in addition to the basic file-serving.
Cons:
- Very slow rebuild times when converting raid types (but isn't this true of all NAS systems). It took me 2 weeks to convert a 2-drive SHR to a 4-drive SHR2.
- Only one PCIe slot for expansion*
- Limited support on built-in packages**
I just want to comment a bit on the cons:
* This device provides four 1GB ports that can be bonded. This is great for my home needs. However, in order to add 10GB ports, I would need to add in an PCIe card that supports it. This can be done, but there is only 1 PCIe slot. This means if you want to use the M2.SSD cache you have to chose, as it also uses the PCIe slot. So you can have *either* M2 cache or 10GB ports, not both.
** I had some problems with the built in packages and had to install some 3rd party packages. The DDNS for example has no support for easydns. Luckily, there is a 3rd party package for that. Also, some of the packages use outdated versions. For instance, you can set up apache 2.4 with PHP 7.3, but if you want to install for example MariaDB, it will force you to use an old PHP version. You can run them simultaneously, but it's a bit odd you can't just use the latest available. You can also shell to this system and install custom stuff - but that really defeats the purpose.
Overall great system for the price though. If only the drives for it were as cheap.

The migration was extremely simple, I backed up my settings and critical data, swapped the drives over and started it up. When I first started I got a notice that my drive configuration had changed and in the Storage Manager I reconfigured the volume, let DSM update the settings and I was off and running.
All my settings transferred over without a problem, there were a couple apps that we outdated and not supported on the new rack station, but nothing that I really used anymore.
I did add the 16 GB RAM upgrade and the Rack Station performance is fantastic.
I have (8) Western Digital 4 TB drives installed for a total of 25.04 TB of usable space. It is very much worth it to spend the money on the enterprise drives, they are meant for this type of workload.
Overall it is a great product and I’m extremely happy with it.

Product experience:
All the MACs are listed on the top of the unit. This made it easy for me to put them into my IP-MAC binding database.
The top cover is easily removable (4 screws) to access the RAM modules for upgrade.
Software migration was an easy step, less than 10 minutes.
Mounting hardware included, very sturdy; will buy the sliding rails later.
All-in-all, very positive experience. Everything is working as it should. Highly recommend this RackStation.
