4.0 out of 5 stars Topping PA3 Desktop Amplifier Impressions
By Lydia on 17 February 2021
Well it works! You plug them into your favourite passive speakers and it can take 2 inputs RCA. The front has a simple button that turns on the amp and switches between input 1 and 2. I run it with my Klipsch RP400M's and it drives them with no problem.

The front only has a single button and a single knob. The button is very easy to press - the unit is heavy enough that pressing the button won't move the amp unit off your table. The knob is very smooth to turn and there is a drilled divot to indicate the volume. When turning the volume dial to zero and back up there is no crackling or auto turning off or on. The AMP is always on. So you can easily turn the dial down to mute your music and turn it back on without worrying about the crackling.

Inside the box, it only contains the power brick, which is as big as the amp itself. I hide mine behind my monitor (you can just see it in the photo). For input, you can buy a 2-male RCA and 3.5mm jack to connect your phone, PC or laptop to the amp.

With regards to the sound, I haven't a clue how it measurements. But when comparing this system to my previous Presonus E4.5 (with built-in amp), I would say that there isn't anything glaringly wrong with the sound - there isn't anything missing or messed up, nothing that couldn't be done to just the different tuning of the speakers.

When the amp is on but no music is playing, there is an audible hiss from the horn (tweeter). It isn't that loud. I have my PC on the desk with me and with the dual 140 mm intake fans on its lowest setting (~1 metre away) I found the PC fans more obvious than the hiss from the speakers. If that bothers you, then you can turn it on and off. It is pretty much instant - 1 second to turn on, 1 second to turn off. BUT the quirky thing about this amp is that when you switch inputs or turn the amp off, it has makes this one-off knock sound. I sounds like someone slightly knocking on the top of the unit. It isn't terribly loud or annoying. In fact I kind of find it useful since turning the amp off requires a long press and the knock sound indicates when to let go of the button.

It delivers more than enough power for desktop uses. But not play music to rock the house loud - it will definitely distort. I found it to start sounding strange once I turned the gain dial more than 75% to max. When playing music the amp does get warm. It never gets hot to the touch, but it definitely does get warm.

If you are looking for a desktop amplifier, the PA3 works. Is it worth $169? I have no idea what it is like compared to the other el-cheapo amps available on amazon. But supposedly Topping is a reasonable brand to buy audio equipment from and it works. Hopefully it lasts.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality control, potential fire hazard
Reviewed in the United States on 27 December 2020
It worked well for a while and then one day I pressed the input switch, I felt a zap of static discharge, and heard a pop inside the enclosure. No more audio output. When I looked inside, I found that the heatsink on the amplifier chip was not properly secured (the screws underneath were loose) and the chip itself had exploded. Both the board and the heatsink were scorched.
