I don't know what has been changed with the newer versions, but both would drop off the wifi within 24 hours of being connected force me to power them on and off again at which point they would re-connect without issue, only to lose wifi connection within a day again. I tried numerous things to get them working (reseting, altering frequency devices connected to router on, removing all other devices in the house from wifi for a day........) but the issue remained. Amazon exchanged these without any issue, so hoping it was a faulty batch I tried again but had exactly the same issue.
This time I contacted TP-Link technical support who initially were quick at responding. However, after exchanging a few emails which provided nothing in the way of actual support, they referred the issue to their next level of support. After getting no further response for the next three weeks I returned the devices to Amazon for a refund.
Now the issue could be my router, but as every other device (including two other TP-Link smart devices) work without issue, chances are there are issues with the smart plugs. Whether this is a compatibility issue with some routers or I was unlucky with four dodgy devices, I don't know due to the lack of real technical support provided by the manufacturer.
To sum up, the old version is great (Hardware V1, firmware 1.2.5) and has been working perfectly for over a year (hence 2 stars rather than 1). The newer ones (HW V2, firmware 1.5.5), seem to have issues staying connected with wifi. I'm now looking into alternatives that will hopefully prove more reliable and can perhaps see the benefit of a dedicated hub plugged into the router that the devices connect through.
