This is a story about a busker and his singing cat and how they lose each other and find each other again.

The story is written entirely in verse and Axel Scheffler's illustrations are lovely and have a child-like quality to them which really adds to the story.

In kids books it's often an obvious story line and you can see where it is going to go from the first word but this one is a bit less predictable than most. It has excitement and a strong sense of family and friendships and the lack of predictability make it a very fun read.

A really sad, poignant tale, which always makes me feel a little sad when I read it. The kids, I think, pick up on that, and it's not their favourite of Julia Donaldson's books. The ending is bitter-sweet, and although there's closure, it's not the nice warm fuzzy closure of her other books.

The rhyming and the songs in the book leave a lot of latitude for the parent to make up their own melody, and the re's enough going on in the pictures to keep kids visually entertained. It's a good bedtime book, but as I said, it's like a song with minor chords running throughout, and no finale on a major chord. It stays a little unsettling and sad all the way through.

If you're not a softie like me, though, the quality of the story is to the usual high standard, the rhyming, the words and images all work perfectly together.

Written with such love, this has it all, drama and comedy, and a good ending. We love cats at our house, and my baby loves listening to the rhyming story and looking at the pictures with me. I’ve never enjoyed a children’s book as much as this, this should be as popular as The Gruffalo, if not more, because unlike The Gruffalo, the story here is richer and more complete, perhaps it is meant for older children.

🐾There is a lot going on in this rhyming story, which is a tad challenging in places for the narrator(!) and can split the pack in terms of sensitivity...but all is well at the end!

Measuring roughly 22.5 cm x 28 cm, the attractive card cover is enhanced by a shiny effect to the 2 felines and gold foil for the titling + author/illustrator ~ the dynamic duo that brought us 'The Gruffalo', as per the sticker on the front.

Inside are 32 shiny finish pages, the story starting straight after the inside cover page, running over colourfully illustrated, double-page spreads with lots to talk about including meaningful facial expressions.

The story carries repeat elements, including the little busking song that is also on the back cover:

🎵 ‘..."Me, you and the old guitar,
How perfectly, perfectly happy we are.
MEEE-EW and the old guitar.
How PURRRR-fectly happy we are!"...' 🐾

Said song is slightly modified towards the back and there is a that aforementioned unexpected twist in the tale at the end.

My children both seem to go mad for any Julia Donaldson book and this wasn't any exception. The rhyming and lovely illustrations we've come to expect make this an enjoyable bedtime read, I suppose my only minor criticism is the bit about Fred getting hurt by a thief stealing his money and then McTat being abandoned does rather upset my daughter, it's a bit of a shame this particular device was chosen to drive a children's story.
