I did try to see if connecting the hdd from the older NAS to the USB port of the new to do the copying but the new NAS did not recognise the filesystem of the old so trying to copying data over that way would not have been possible. If we didn't have a Windows XP machine we would've had to get help from TerraMaster who offered help which in the event we didn't require. However, I did wonder whether TerraMaster could include in their firmware for the F4-210 to support the filesystems in their older NASs through the USB connection.
Well I sent the Device back to Amazon. What a terrible device, had so many problems, I can see why they are cheap. The software just sucks, and is so buggy. I took 3 goes just download and install the software, the raid performance sucks. It would go 110meg to 0 to 110meg to 0, My QNAP was just constant 110meg. Im sticking to QNAP or Synology or BYO in the future. Complete waste of time. Just my opinion and im sure others have had better experiences, but just avoid it.
Their tech support is non existent, go to their "forums" and people just complain how crap they are.
Installing the HDDs in the unit was straightforward and simple.
The box came with labeled bags of screws and even a full sized screwdriver.
The setup steps were clear and concise.
I really like the GUI when its comes to actually using the NAS.

Update
I returned the kit to Amazon and received a prompt refund. Within a couple of days the TerraMaster agent offered me the kit as a gift with free set up. After nearly 4 hours remote intervention in the bowels of the device, the the DNLA server still did not work properly. I could not stream mp4 video.
Update
Nothing has changed otherwise since the remote intervention 2 days ago but I made one final attempt to see if I could get the NAS to stream video and it worked via DNLA! No idea why. So far so good but after an hour the DNLA server dropped out and never recovered, thereby terminating the streaming and making all the controls unresponsive. The only antidote I have found so far is to power the TerraMaster down and re-initialise, a process taking at least 30 minutes.
I really ought to rate it as 1 star because the server does not do what it says on the can but I'm feeling generous since I can stream photos and music with no issues so far.
Resolution
After several more exchanges of emails the technical support at Terra-Master told me that the CPU in the F2-210 model wasn't really up to streaming video. If only ........

The first downside I noticed though were the drawers which hold the hard drives as they do feel a bit cheap. Despite the metallic look, they are actually plastic and it's very obvious when you pick these up. As long as you're not swapping hard drives around often it shouldn't really matter but the front of the drawer is what you can see in the pictures so when I say it's cheap, I do feel that pulling the hinge to pull the draw out one too many times could cause it to snap. For me though, I'm putting the hard drives in and then leaving it as it is so it's not a big deal.
There isn't a manual in the box, instead just a link on a piece of paper where you download the Manual and Software for your machine (start.terra-master.com). This website gives you a basic step-by-step guide which is pretty much just "Plug your hard drives in, connect the power, ethernet cable and turn it on". You're also prompted to download the manual and the client side software which simply scans the network for the IP of the NAS and gives you a few options (Primarily "Login" which just redirects you to the IP and port via a web browser).
The first time you go to the browser site, you are warned that the hard drives are going to be formatted and you're then asked to configure a file type (Btrfs or Ext4), whether you want to RAID the drives, etc.
The NAS is primarily managed by a web browser GUI and is quite nice and responsive to look at (although a couple of typing errors if we're being really picky). You do have the option to use SSH and Telnet (I believe they were enabled out of the box...) although I can't comment on what that's like yet.
The GUI is nice and having spent an hour or so playing with things and familiarizing myself with how the permissions work and how to set up folder shares for my network, it now seems fairly straight forward. The one thing that really threw me off though is that shares are configured in the Control Panel as I spent way too long right clicking on folders in the "File Explorer" and choosing "Share" which actually just generates a link to view files in a browser but never sets it up as a full blown network share.
With regards to applications, the app store is very small but you do have Plex, Python, a built in Media Server option and Docker (which opens up a world of opportunities).
So the downsides...
As mentioned before, I spent an embarrassing amount of time wondering why my "shared" folders weren't showing on a Windows computer. Every time I entered the IP in Windows File Explorer I was prompted to log in but then could only see that user's directory on the NAS. I finally discovered that I had to make a share in the Control Panel for people to see.
The other downside? Getting files onto it. This has caused me quite a few problems so far and I'm still working through it...
I have 2x 4TB Hard Drives on it with RAID 1 (so they mirror each other in case one dies). When I finally got a share up and running, I tried to copy and paste a few hundred GB of videos to the NAS over the network. It seemed to be ok and would fluctuate in speeds a bit (I didn't capture the exact speeds, sorry!) but generally seemed acceptable. I was feeling pretty confident so I started to copy from another location at the same time.
This was my first mistake. The second copy obviously dragged the first one down and so I changed my mind and cancelled the second copy. This then crashed out the first copy which went to 0KB/S and never recovered.
After a while, I cancelled the initial copy and, thinking it would be better to do a restart than a partial copy, deleted all the files that had copied over so far.
This was my second mistake. The NAS went unresponsive, I couldn't even log back into it because it would get stuck on the sign on screen (if the page even loaded). After 5-10 minutes I finally got into the GUI and safely rebooted it. After a restart it was still crazy slow.
After this I then hard-reset the device and it went back to being it's normal self. I then remembered there are 2 USB ports on the back and decided to plug a hard drive directly into it and copy and paste it over using the GUI instead. At first it was was averaging at 0.90B/s (yes, bytes) but then I noticed in the status it said that the Media Pool was still synchronising and realised it was most likely updating both hard drives so they still mirrored each other.
Now it's telling me that the volume is "Good" but the speed has only increased to 2MB/s.... I'm too scared to touch it now as it's finally actually doing what it should be. We're on 7%! It's been copying from 2pm and it's now 6pm.
So maybe it's my fault. It's a bit annoying though. I might actually cancel this in a minute and try again. Maybe it's capped because it started when it's synchronizing.

If you want the cheapest 2-bay NAS possible, this is the one I would go for. It has the same hardware specification as the Synology DS218play while being over £40 cheaper.
It has plenty of features too, Plex works, there is Docker allowing to install a range of superb web apps. As far as a backup solution, there is nothing wrong with it at all.
However, Synology has a wider range of apps, as well as extensive mobile and desktop apps, so I ended upgrading to that.
Depending on your requirements, I wouldn’t really recommend a 2-bay solution, they are limited and you will lose half the storage to parity. I would storngly recomend considering upgrading to the TerraMaster F4-210 providing 4-drive bays for not much more money. I had two old 4TB hard drives lying around, so a 2-bay system is a perfect affordable way to reuse them, adding some useful network storage to my home.

In terms of performance, over ethernet it easily saturates 1GBIT and I see transfers to and from the NAS of over 100MB/s. To those who experience poor performance in the beginning, check the admin interface, you'll probably find it's "synchronising" which is just it building the RAID array. This took about 6 hours on the Toshiba N300 4tb drives I put in it.
The permissions management functionality is really nice. The admin UI in its entirety is a little overengineered (they've tried to make a website look like a full windows 10 desktop!) But works reliably and quickly. Much better than I was expecting.
Build quality wise it's rock solid. Built extremely well. The noise the fan makes is quieter than the hard drives inside it, so that gives you some idea as to the noise level.
It supports btrfs and ext4, and also on disk encryption for individual shares, which is nice.
If I had to suggest some improvements, I'd suggest that the admin UI could do with a temperature readout - maybe pull the temperature of the hard drives out and display them in the NAS status window. It would be nice to also see which clients were consuming how much bandwidth in this same area.
Hopefully it lasts as long as the hard drives inside it!

Quality:
The quality is amazing for the price, the front and back are high qaulity platic with the inside being metal, the drive trays and even screw and screw driver....yes they give you a screw driver, the ethernet is high quality but very short.
OS:
The OS looks and feels like windows but runs on linux it is very user friendly so i suggest this to anyone who is just looking for a budget NAS is has its times where it is slow but a simple reboot will fix this
Setup: the setup is really easy just install the TNAS software on your pc although when i was setting this up i couldent map the drive so i had to map it manually, putting the drives in there caddys is easy although it is weird having to screw from the bottom, if you have a think drive you will need to tip the machine on its back as showed on the video, if you have a smaller drive then there is no need for this
Speed: i get around 30-90 mbps on the things i am transferring, i am only running a 6tb WD Green so this is fast for me
Apps: the apps are really good but sometimes a little buggy, for most of the cloud sync apps they only scan for new files every hour or so you will need to reboot or stop and start the task for it to continue
support: i didnt contact support but if you just type it up there is a terramaster forum that has alot of awnsers
overall: this is a good and budget nas it is also user friendly and i would recoment this to anyone wanting a buget NAS
EDIT:
I first did the first part of this review 1 week after having it, I have since returned it because I spent 1 week downloading my Google drive to this and found out that the Google drive and mega cloud sync software is extremely buggy and didn't sync properly then when I was logged into it with an admin account I couldn't Access my photos because I didn't have permission when I was an admin other than that the interface is nicer, I now have the Synology ds220j it was a bit more expensive and less power full but the software is extremely stable, the sync features work and it just seems like a better NAS
