Pros: - I was pleasantly surprised at the build quality, build specs, and feature set of this device, especially at this price point. - The interface is clean and easy to use, though I've found the whole thing a bit buggy, and I worry about its data security.
Cons: - Several parts of the UI show translation issues where whole words were not translated into English. This isn't a huge deal for me, but it's certainly sloppy. - The mobile app is not production ready. It's missing very basic features and looks awful. - Some of the built in applications simply don't work. For example, I tried connecting the device to an existing OpenVPN. That's supported under the Network tab. Note, I'm not trying to host a VPN, but connect to one. It will not connect to my VPN (despite plenty of other objects happily doing so) and the interface to connect doesn't even make sense as the combination of inputs is wrong. - Getting into the box via SSH shows many areas which are configured drastically wrong. Several folders have 777 permissions which means literally anyone with access can gain access to files regardless of how they're configured via the other interfaces. - When attempting to open a support ticket, they wanted remote access to my desktop and the NAS device as a first step. This is absolutely ridiculous and I would not give someone else this level of access to my infrastructure. Especially not as a first step.
I had been amazed at Terramaster's tech support team. They keep track and send emails about my issue. And there were until the last email. They are there to support, take my word for this.
About the device itself, I had an issue with the installation but it got sorted out by a pro help. This device, TNAS as they would like to refer, I am using as a PLEX server to broadcast to my devices throughout my home and out. There are no hiccups as fas this device is concerned. Playing a 4K movie tends to buffer but it is not the issue of this device but rather my internet speed. This device came with 4GB of RAM and I upgraded with 8GB. Bit 4GB is sufficient if you want to use as Server and use the files on the run, obviously you will need good internet speed at both ends. I can say one thing about this device, very reliable and good specs. I wish I had opted for 4 bay or 5 bay version of this TNAS. I think
TerraMaster has good products and an even more good support system.
The UI is poor, but if you know what you are doing, you will never use it. I’m not crazy about using services based in China to run this device and have disabled them. If this is also a problem for you, seek some other appliance.
