I have read all of Folletts books and wonder if sometimes he writes cannon fodder just to top up his bank balance !
The quality of writing ( in its broadest context ) between his best and just average is a mile wide and this book struggles to make it to an average mark.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

plot not easy to cop

I have loved all of Ken Folletts books but this one does not make the grade at all. I gave up after about 25% of the way through it. Did he actually write this?

Not as good as some of his other novels. The ending seemed a bit soft, particularly when the build up promised something special.

Pacey thriller from Follett that's not recommended if you live on a fault line ...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 April 2020Verified Purchase
I very rarely find a book that is truly unputdownable but wow Ken Follett's "The Hammer of Eden" is comes close. Told at pace it's a good old fashioned cops versus bad guys thriller; of course you know who's going to win, it's never the bad guys but this time they mange to score a couple of point as the story races through its many twists and turns.
The cop of course has issues but don't they all, isn't that a qualification for the role of fictional detective? This time the cop's a thirty something, single again, half-Vietnamese FBI agent, and the victim of discrimination; but smart and on a mission to prove herself. And the bad guys, well they might have a point but ... [no plot spoiler here!].
But beware "The Hammer of Eden" is a relatively quick read, Follett's not one to fill your head with unnecessary complicating details of seismology when there's a story to be told, and the ending is a bit too convenient and abrupt [to meet a publisher's deadline?]. And yes the premise is preposterous, but who cares isn't stretching credibility the hallmark of a good thriller, of course you can't "manufacture an earthquake", or could you?
Not recommended if you live on a fault line.

More tension from a great author
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 July 2020Verified Purchase
As with other Ken Follett books, it is difficult to draw a distinct boundary between fiction and possible reality. Could this happen? Is it physically possible? Has it already happened? Undoubtedly there are many secrets hidden away by governments and national corporations which us mere mortals are never aware of. Is this another one? Intriguing and as always well written.

Very Good

This is a great fast moving story about a commune in a remote part of California fighting for its survival against future flood waters from a soon to be built dam. The leader of the commune is a psycho who threatens the State with devastation. His opponent is an ambitious FBI agent. A great story line, a fast pace and good characters.

Another cracker by Follett

Ive nearly al of Ken Follett’s books and love them all. He’s a genius story teller in my opinion.
As a stand-alone novel this is up there with some of his best - I’d highly recommend this and all of his other books too.

Disappointing

I thought this would be a thriller but it sort of petered out half way through. The ending was weak and unsatisfying. Still, what can you expect for 99p?
