How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

I thought that this book reminded me of Judge Dredd to a certain point because of the setting of the story. I had to agree with another review on here when this book first starts it's a little rough at first but once he gets to the location they send him to it runs smoothly. It's a bit different to the other books in the Renegade series but I guess that’s the idea. I recommend it. And looking forward to the next installment to this new spin off series. 👍

This is a great action packed story, well told. Love the character Hal, though he did have me worried that he was going to continue to be the jerk he was portrayed, and yes he still is a jerk (after reading the 3rd in the series) but his character has developed enough that we can see (sort of) the softer side coming out. Highly recommend to read.

The writing style is good, subject matter interesting, characters developed satisfactorily.
The overall story progression is too slow for my liking.
In some sections, a significant number of chapters go by with no appreciable advance in the story line.
The end of the book leaves you wanting to read the next book in order to move the story on.
Enjoyed the book - bought the next couple.

This is a military sci-fi novel that focuses on spec ops and dark ops. The main character is ex special forces and spent time doing dark ops before winding up on death row. The blurb for the book is pretty spot on and it reminded me in ways of escape from New York. The mc has an AI that gives him grief the whole way through the book. The good guys are good, but flawed so not always awesome and don't always win and the bad guys are pretty damn evil.
I was looking for something different to read and glad that I accidently bought this. Enjoyed it so much I finished it in a day and I am now looking forward to reading and enjoying book 2.

TOP 100 REVIEWER
Hal is a specially modified special operations soldier. The PTB, the Union in this case, gave him an artificial arm and wired his brain to communicate with the AI in his arm. They also coated his bones with tungsten and made him even more invulnerable than the best of spec ops! They called him and his colleagues Reapers. Then they used them to infiltrate situations that others couldn’t; sometimes to deliver information, retrieve somebody or kill someone! Then, Hal discovered that the gangs at home had killed his father and that sent him on a rampage that had never been seen before. He hunted down and killed them all. For that he was sentenced to death. While he was on death row they decided that they needed him to carry out one last retrieval, this one from the largest prison in existence, the Dreadmax. Once built to be a battle station it had since been turned into the ultimate prison. If he accepts the job they’ll rethink his death sentence. Anything is better than rotting away on death row so, he accepts. But this may be more than even he can bite off! He knows that the Union is not to be trusted but even he is stunned by their refusal to arm him properly or to allow him to be involved with the planning. It makes you wonder if they really want their man back! This book is full on action and gives us another view of the Union of the Renegade universe.. Definitely 5 stars.

An interesting book where a condemned former special forces/dark operations operator is given a chance to rescue a high value client whilst removing himself from death row. Our MC, is sarcastic and does not deal well with authority leading to to some interesting moments between himself and his neural network A.I. Whilst there are no flashbacks to previous operations, there is mention of his ability to achieve his goal.
A good book and looking forward to reading the next in the series. Read it on Kindle Unlimited.

Action packed the whole way through!

Wow. I love JN Chaney and his Renegade books, but his collaboration with Scott Moon has taken it to a new level. Set in the Renegade universe, it's a stand alone book, so you don't have to have read his other books to enjoy this. Of course if you haven't read them, after this, you will! Non stop action pretty much from the start. I had thought it'd be kind of like 'Escape from New York', A similar premise, in that Cain has to rescue someone from a supermax prison, but the pace of the story never let's up. The usual mix of action and humour that I love from Chaney, there is also intrigue as you know the characters are hiding something. The kind of book you can't put down. I read this in one sitting and ended up staying awake all night just so I could finish it. I can't wait for the next instalment.

Long winded but good story line
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 March 2019Verified Purchase
The book is too long, far too much wandering, describing the environment, meeting people.
Reduce the book by a third, drop meaningless encounters and keep the primary story line and this book would have been better for it
Having said all of that, the characters are well developed, the story line is very "Escape from New York" esque and when the story line stays with the main aspects can be fast paced and entertaining
I suppose the best rating anyone can give a book is whether they buy the next in the series or not. For me that's a yes

An action sci-fi novel. Heavy on the action and a busy start. But enough to like about the characters and develops well. Writing style gets on with it, which is good and looking forward to seeing where the story goes
