I chose this 5 star rating on content and timeliness. The ugly past has come again. This story of twin brothers show the duality of ourselves. The vilification of a group of people has begun, those with brown shin are the present day so called villains, The whipping post for all the propagandaizes ills of the world. The evangelical christians have sold their collective souls to have it their way.
This book depicts mankind as the ugly beasts they are. Their innate selfishness, cruelty, greed, and lust for power. This type of perversion is ripe to pick when we lose all sense of shame, grasping for power by walking on the backs of others. Take heed for the winds of this ugliness is growing right here in America.

Wonderful exposition on prewar Germany, maybe prewar today as well

Reading it now, knowing what happened during this time, I was amazed at the insight to a country where she had not visited. Tremendous insight into daily life, although of a upper middle class. The slowly wiping away of empathy for fellow Germans, just because they were not Arian, is clearly depicted. How many times have you heard people say, "How could the people of Germany not known what was happening?" is made patently obvious. It does get a little bogged down, but sticking with it, is worth the impact of the correlation to what is happening here in the US today.
The gradual loss of God in daily life, the turning of the church to less ideological statements on the pulpits. Fascinating reading, might wake up some people, if they are not already in denial so far that they can not see the correlation.
Taylor Caldwell has never disappointed me!

Takes Patience!
Reviewed in the United States on 7 January 2020Verified Purchase
This is the second Taylor Caldwell book I’ve read, the first being I, Judas, which I loved. I had forgotten that reading her requires strict attention to symbolism & patience. I thought that the first half of the book dragged since it focused so much on Therese’s feelings of despair & Karl’s descent. But the second half of the book was a reward for my sticking with it.. As Therese comes to understand what she must do, the book picks up. In addition, it’s a pleasure to pick through the passages to recognize the references to historical Christianity. I recommend this book for those who are ready for a serious read, and a look into a past that frighteningly mirrors our present time.

A novel for today written about yesterday.. We a indeed doomed to repeat the sins of the past. Forgetting about GOD in our choices of leaders can only bring us a repeat of the past.
