I got three drives for my home server from different manufacturers (Toshiba, Seagate and Western Digital). The Toshiba N300 works well (read / write performance) but was found to be significantly noisier than the equivalent Seagate and WD. The drive is heavy, and runs high vibration and temperature at all times. Ended up returning the drive due to the noise / vibration concerns, rendering the drive unusable for deployment at home.

This was a replacement drive. I received a dud on my purchase. That is fine, defects happen and I don't mind swapping for another one. Amazon offered the replacement and covered shipping, perfect. This is the replacement. A drive that has an inkjet print label. The drive itself is a massively used Western Digital 3TB drive. The box from Toshiba can be opened from the bottom without breaking any seals. The label with the serial has been peeled off. Clearly someone stole the original and planted a replacement.

Have four, 4TB N300's installed in a 5 bay NAS in RAID5. Performance is as expected, but damn, these things are LOUD! Noisiest drives I have ever had spinning. Even when idle, I can hear them from 12 feet away - when all four are working, the noise is ridiculous. (if it wasn't for all the other reviews regarding the noise, I would have thought all four were defective) Would not recommend for an sound sensitive area (HTPC/NAS near your TV). Mine is in a small network closet (with sufficient airflow for heat dissipation).

Bought 3 of these drives, did a burn in test for 24 hours. Zero issues. I bought 3 HGST Enterprise drives before and ended up replacing all of them due to a assortment of SMART errors. The Toshiba drives are in a Synology NAS and running non-stop - so far very reliable. I will try and do an update at 6 months to see how they are holding up and if I have to do a warranty claim how it works out.

Never have to concern about buying a horrific SMR drive; lowest faliure rate accroding to annual reports. The N300 runs louder compare to X300, though given that it is optimzed for server type duties the noise is acceptable as long as you dont put your nas on your night stand.
Official source that confirms the PMR:
"For example, in use cases such as network-attached storage (NAS), where continuous random writing regularly occurs, Toshiba’s current product line for consumers features the N300, which does not use SMR."
Can be located by searching "Use of Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology in Toshiba Consumer Hard Drives".
