1.0 out of 5 stars Not for Network cables
Reviewed in Mexico on 23 September 2020
The description states the device serves for protecting a 2-line telephone cable or a network cable. If you look at the label on the device itself, it clearly states that it protects wires 3 to 6, which do correspond to the two wire pairs (4&5 and 3&6) that are used for standard phone lines.

This leaves pair 1&2 and 7&8 unprotected. For 100BASE-T networking, the pairs that are used for transmit/receive are 1&2 and 3&6. This means that pair 1&2 is not protected, nor are 7&8, whether you use them for PoE or not . With 1000BASE-T (gigabit ethernet), all 8 wires are used. In all cases, half of the wires you bring into your sensitive equipment are NOT protected.

I bought this device for protecting a network cable that comes from an outdoor WIFI antenna, powered with PoE. I bought it because the product description said it would protect a network cable. The label on the product itself states it does NOT. This device is completely useless for me.

The model number "DTEL2" should be giving a clue that it is intended for 2 phone lines... not network equipment.

UPDATE:
Both the manual and the inscription in the device's package make It clear: For network cables, the intended model is DNET1, for 10/100BASE-T. DTEL2 is clearly described as being for 2-line modem/fax protection only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works with uverse, but connect it the right way.

I am on Day One of installing the DTEL2 surge protector for a customer of mine. I used it in line between the incoming phone line and the plug on the AT&T uverse router where you insert the RJ11 male jack. The structured media center was all plastic so I had to ground it to the case of the nearby circuit breaker panel, taking the trouble not to extend the extra ground wire any longer than I needed to.

I have a client in a condominium building of 30 homes that has an abnormally high equipment failure rate, usually after storms. It has been directly struck by lighting a couple of times. Maybe it is that building in Ghostbusters... Anyway, I've pulled out all of the stops and involved any type of protection including whole house surge. Despite these precautions this person had recently lost their smart home hub and a computer in a lightning storm. The only unprotected path was the internet & phone. (Another neighbor in the building had Fiber and no issues)

When researching I'd read in the comments where some DSL connections were affected when this filter was added, and it did not seem to happen in this case. I made several speed tests after connecting and couldn't notice a difference. HOWEVER, you do have to plug it in a certain way. Oddly enough, this is not mentioned in the owners manual, and the jacks are inconspicuously labeled.

When connecting, plug in your device (in my case, modem/router) into the jack marked EQUIP. The EQUIP port is on the same end as the green ground wire. As a secondary precaution, I used a marker to label the jacks for anyone who could accidentally reverse the connections in the future when working on the panel.

So far, so good.
