To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
I suspected this when purchasing... but the product states its a 2 bay 8 TB drive unit. In fact it contains 2 x 4 TB drives and only is 8 TB if drives bound together. Suspected but thought it had 2 x 8 TB in it because the description stated: "A 1.3 GHz dual-core processor for high performance and ultra-fast transfer speeds. Up to 16TB of centralized storage for your entire network. Simple system management for personalized backup." So when purchasing the 8 TB unit - I thought that may mean that if you configure it for max storage (rather than redundancy) it would give you 16 TB (because its 2 x 8 TB) but that was not the case.
I like this storage device. It was easy to set up and get working for my home network. I am not the most technologically savvy person and I was able to figure it out fairly easy. I use it as a back up cloud storage for my home and help free up space on my devices. I did install a back up to this as well since just about everything is digital these days and I would hate to have all my pictures and videos be lost due to (fill in the blank). I have it set up in two 4 TB disks and have an external 5TB back up for this drive. I do this for failsafe since things do fail and I do not want the data lost. It is easy to set up the devices to Time Machine on Mac and other devices and have it back up daily for safe keeping. Granted that most all of my stuff is pictures and videos of my family, it does what I need it to do and I can access it remotely if needed. For the simple back up of data I recommend it.
This is more prosumer than consumer. Need to put in a little time figuring out the features/options as there are plenty. It's a little tricky to get it updated but once it's running it seems to work fine. There are conflicts with other software (looking at you Sophos) so be aware - we are still waiting for a resolution to allow Time Machine backups on the network (there are workarounds for single-instance backups). Anticipating all will work well once that is resolved.
Setup this drive up a week ago. I'm using it for TimeCapsule backups for two Mac computers and it seems to be working so far. The UI is not bad but could be a bit more informative in the setup process. Two primary issues: First, the storage capacity is only half what is advertised on the box. I understand this is the nature of RAID storage, but I think the box is misleading, so I'm giving only 3 stars. Second, the drive makes occasional chirping noises which make me wonder if there is a mechanical issue and also the noises are mildly annoying.
The setup procedure sends you to a web site that ultimately sends you to a site to load a Yahoo search bar, but there is no info re how to setup the MyCloud system. Once again, Si Valley wants to juice me for my data without providing real value.
My previous NAS died during electrical fluctuations & outages in February 2021. The price and hard drive capacity of this device was the best of all I units I reviewed. The WD Red NAS hard drives in my old device were interchangeable with this unit which is great so I could recover information from them.
