Previously available only on an expensive import, these two concept albums about the Civil War were written by Paul Kennerly, produced by Glyn Johns and starred an unbelievable cast of musicians: Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Emmylou Harris, Levon Helm (as Jesse James!), Eric Clapton, Charlie Daniels and Rodney Crowell among others! This 2-CD set includes original and new notes and an unreleased bonus track.

For many reasons great to listen to as the historical story unfolds!
My favourites on White Mansions, I think it is the greatest anti war hymn, it is so simple about the aftermath of battle where humans have killed each other while the horses just do what they do!
So if interested, they still hold good even today and are worth the listen!
As for 'Jesse James' - this is new to me but it's pairing with 'Mansions' certainly makes this a VERY good and affordable release. I had to import mine from the USA, but the cost was still very low. As with 'Mansions' the variety of songs is broad without any poor tracks. In some ways - though NOT in terms of style - it reminded me of Marty Robbins 'Gunfighter ballads' period. There's a good balance between rollicking storysongs and slower, acoustic ballads with occasional bursts of accapella. if I have one tiny gripe it's the rather 'hammy' use of dialogue just before you hear a very unconvincing sound effect as Jesse is shot - followed by a worryingly grief-free cry from his wife Zerelda.
The booklet that comes with this double CD is excellent and explains both the history of the period and characters as well as outlining the storyline that underpins each of the themes.
All-in-all an exceptionally worthwhile release that deserves to be widely appreciated and enjoyed.
On a TOTALLY different tack - my references to 'concept albums' is at the heart of this review. Perhaps the best, recent album in this genre that I have encountered and thoroughly enjoyed is 'Harbour of Tears' by the group Camel.
Harbour of Tears
The music and style are utterly different, but if you enjoy good music and like recordings in which songs followed a conceptual theme, it could be worth a listen. The CD is now rather expensive (Camel stopped recording some years ago when their leader fell ill), but the whole album can be listened to on Youtube.
I would buy White Mansions again in a New York minute, I still love it, but I wouldn't recommend this double CD other than for completing the set.
If you like concept albums, or are a follower of the American Civil War, or like quality Country-tinged music, or (!) are a fan of any, or many, of the artist roster - Give it a listen!
