What is a surge protector?

A surge protector is a device that protects sensitive electronic equipment and devices from harmful voltage spikes and power surges. It absorbs excess energy much like a sponge absorbs water. They are different from power strips which provide power extension and extra outlets, but offer no protection against power spikes or surges.

What is a power surge?

A power surge is a short-term increase in voltage (or voltage spike) due to lightning strikes or unusual line conditions, like when power companies switch power distribution across grids. It's important to periodically replace your surge protector (once every 3-4 years is recommended in most cases) since power surges wear down the protective components inside the surge protector over time.

Why is surge protection important

The average household gets 350 power surges per year. Overvoltage, brownouts, power surges and voltage spikes occur five times a day on average. Small, frequent power surges cause cumulative damage, shortening the product lifespan. Power surges are the number one cause of data loss. Over 50 percent of equipment failure can be attributed to power surge/failure. The right surge protection will save your valuable electronics and extend the life of your computer, telephone, laptop, notebook, tablet, smartphone, TV, sound system and many more. Choosing a surge protector will safeguard all your valuable electronics; many are backed by connected equipment warranties.

What is a connected equipment warranty?

A connected equipment warranty covers equipment that is damaged by transient voltage while properly connected through a surge protector to a properly wired AC power line with a protective ground. Brands that offer CEWs will repair or replace any equipment damaged by a power surge, spike or lightning strike while properly connected to their surge protector, up to the listed amount.

Belkin 6 way surge protected socket adapter (BSV603af2M):
Good points: Sturdy, well made plastic (grey and white). Recessed switch means you are unlikely to accidentally turn it off (and it has a nice solid sounding mechanism). LEDs show when sockets are protected and when there is no earth present. Sufficiently thick supply wire.
Bad points: No mounting points - I want to wall mount this and I can't. It's not a true rectangle - this might not be an issue for you but it's wedge shaped (although not unattractively so) and my sense of order says NO! It's not user rewireable - not an issue for most, but I'd like to be able to if I need to.
Only four stars purely down to lack of mounting points.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surging into the lead
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 February 2020
Having recently purchased a new dishwasher I was keen to ensure that it would have a long and useful life, so decided to get a surge protector to protect against electrical surges. It's certainly cheaper to buy a surge protector plug than to replace white goods!
It is a really good device for protecting expensive household electronics.
I opted for the Belkin single plug because it is a known, good quality brand that I trust. There is a prominently displayed £10,000 connected equipment warranty on the box (see photo), which would easily cover many different types of electrical/electronic equipment that one might want to protect. There is a handy green light on the actual plug unit that lights up to show that the surge protector plug is operational and your connected equipment is protected.
It's a relatively bulky plug (see photo, which includes a tape measure for easy reference), so don't expect to be able to push large appliances flat against the wall, slimmer types are available. This wasn't a big issue I my case.
All in all, although I haven't had a surge that I'm aware of, so can't comment on the actual electrical cut-out, I'm very happy with my purchase and have acquired a second one for my not-so-new fridge-freezer.
