The WXA-50 is compatible with all types of music sources and services, such as streaming services. Provided with various types of terminals for connecting a TV, CD player, computer and other AV equipment, you'll be able to enjoy music from around the world throughout your home from just one component. You can hear all the music sources from your smartphone via wireless Bluetooth or Airplay connection. Pressing any button on the front panel turns the unit on and initiates playback of the previously selected source. Quick and easy access to your favorite music. The simple design creates a stylish musical space and integrates beautifully with your audio system. With a high quality metal body and cool two-tone coloring, Yamaha's fastidiousness extends to the exterior, for a completely enjoyable listening experience. The WXA-50 reaps the benefits of Yamaha's advanced audio technologies and circuit designs. The preamp circuitry, for example, minimizes digital jitter and uses the same high performance ESS DAC that is found in high-end AV receivers. Yamaha's proprietary power supply ground configuration, called DAC on Pure Ground, ensures that the power supply will never negatively affect sound quality. The 48-bit digital volume control provides much greater precision and quality that conventional digital or analogue controls. In addition, a highly rigid, metal chassis supplies the stability necessary for powerful, clear music reproduction. The WXA-50 supports a wide range of high resolution formats, including DSD 5.6 MHz, FLAC and WAV, AIFF 192 kHz / 24-bit, and ALAC (Apple Lossless) 96 kHz / 24-bit for iTunes. Whether from a music download site or from music streaming services, you can enjoy the full benefits of high resolution sound sources, for a feeling like you're right inside a concert hall.

I recently began a foray into entry-level 'audiophile' territory-- first with a pair of Pioneer SP-FS52; and now the KEF Q350's-- so I was looking for an amp that would enable me to enjoy my speakers at their best while acting as an all around hub for my audio/video activities. I'm happy to say the WXA-50 has fit the bill nicely.
I learned about this amp and its overall good quality thanks to amirim's 'Review and Measurements of Yamaha WXA-50 Streaming Amp' on the Audio Science Review forums. His data revealed low distortion at the amp's rated power outputs using the AirPlay and analog inputs. Extrapolating from other information in the thread and around the Internet, it seemed likely that DACs used for optical and Bluetooth input would provide good quality, too. I was also interested to learn the 'amp' part of this unit is an ICEpower module: these seem to be highly regarded, and can be found in other quality products by companies like B&W. The amp also features line-level and subwoofer outputs.
Having run the amp for a few months now, I continue to be pleased by the sound quality and features in general. Even driving my speakers at high volumes, I've yet to encounter distortion or noise; and the amp allows me to channel the following inputs, fulfilling all of my typical use cases:
- Optical, for content playing on my video device.
- AirPlay, for music via my Apple devices.
- Coaxial, for playing CDs via my Blu-ray player (which I get using the WXA 50's line-in and a Modi DAC by Schiit audio).
- Bluetooth, for guests, and in case I leave the Apple ecosystem in the future.
...and better still, each input can be directly selected via remote control, which allows easy consolidation of all A/V controls to one remote or app via the Logitech Harmony platform.
I find 'smart' devices, like TVs, are often poorly executed, so I was leery about this being a 'smart' amp. While I rarely use the Music Cast app, it easily connected the amp to my wireless network, and between the app and browser-based interface, I'm pleased with the various options the provide. I like that basic sound adjustments to left/right balance, subwoofer volume, high/mid/low balance, etc, can be made through both portals-- and, crucially, that the amp can run in 'direct' mode to bypass EQ settings for uncolored sound. Standby/auto-off time, granularity of the volume increment/decrement (love this, being that it's a push-button adjustment via remote, and these are often too much or too little), LED brightness, and more can also be adjusted. The unit also features wired 'remote' input and output ports, which allow the device to be turned on or trigger a power-on for other components is also a nice touch.
Last but not least: great build quality, too, with a solid metal case that doubles as a heatsink (I have yet to hear the fan kick on). Although the volume knob feels a little wobbly, I rarely touch it.
All around a great package. It did feel a smidge expensive when I bought it, but it continues to satisfy. Ultimately, I would purchase again.
