When I set out to build my home theater I did quite a bit of shopping around for the receiver. I had almost pulled the trigger on an Onkyo, but I came across the Yamaha RX-V series. They seemed to be pretty good "bang for your buck" receivers, and it just so happened that Amazon was having a sale on the 677. For the feature set that it had, and the price they were selling it for, it was a no brainer. I hit the buy button and never looked back!
I previously had a "1000 watt" RCA Home theater in a box setup that was temporarily powering my new speakers, but it wasn't doing a great job of it. I also couldn't hook all of them up due to it being a 5.1 output but I ran speakers for 7.1. Once I got the Yamaha unit installed I was in for quite the treat. This thing blows my old RCA HTIB receiver out of the water! Outstanding sound, so many features, and it looks fantastic.
Initial setup is a breeze, with an intuitive on-screen menu that makes the process as painless as could be. You'll be up and running in no time flat. If you choose to use it, the YPAO auto setup is pretty neat. I went and tweaked the settings a bit more afterwards to get it to my liking. The auto adjustment is a great feature and is a good way to get your settings in the ballpark for further customization. Just make sure the room is nice and quiet while the YPAO program is running. It doesn't take long.
The companion app on my phone makes using everything on here a breeze. I use the app over my Harmony Ultimate for sheer ease of use and the feature set. I can tune in to internet radio of all sorts, to include scanner feeds (I'm a volunteer Firefighter/EMT so I enjoy listening to the radio traffic of big cities). I've never been big on the multitude of DSP settings, but they're there if you want them. The included remote doesn't seem too bad, but I don't use it. Honestly the app does everything I could possibly need it to, and in a more user friendly way.
Overall, I am impressed and very happy with the performance of this unit. With solid build quality, good looks, and great features, Yamaha has made a happy customer out of me.

Great Low-Cost, 4K, Two Zone Receiver
Reviewed in the United States on 16 November 2015Style Name: ReceiverVerified Purchase
We purchased this to replace an older model (circa 2006) Yamaha A/V receiver that had begun to have HDMI issues, this new model offers far more HDMI ports, which is a bonus to our complex home theatre set-up that includes: two satellite receivers/DVRs, an Apple TV, a Roku, blu-ray player and an 83" TV, all controlled by
Logitech Harmony Ultimate Remote
. This A/V receiver also controls four outdoor speakers, as well as our 7.1 surround.
We let this receiver do all the sound and video conversion, connecting it to our TV with a single HDMI cable. In fact, with all the additional available HDMI inputs on this new model, we were able to connect ALL of our equipment using HDMI which made set-up dead simple, and it works flawlessly. There are five rear HDMI inputs, and an additional front aux HDMI port which is awesome for connecting devices without having to mess about behind the receiver.
We used the automatic microphone set-up and let the receiver balance the sound itself and find the experience and mix very good. If you want to manually set everything up, that's also fairly simple to do via the onscreen menus. (You can also tweak the settings post-automatic set-up, which is what we did.)
Our receiver arrived with the latest firmware update and had zero issue with 4K video conversation. The video picture looks awesome, though we've noticed a tiny lag -- TV shows brief black screen, though sound is playing -- when it encounters certain video inputs. This may be a somewhat delayed handshake and could be either the receiver or the TV, which is a few years old now. (I know they're always futzing with the HDMI DRM schemes.)
This also offers AirPlay, for audio only, which works flawlessly to play music via our iPad, iPhones or even a laptop. All devices saw the receiver right away, and played steadily, even when more than 15' feet away. Ours also came with the optional bluetooth receiver, but I found the AirPlay more consistent and you have to use the USB power port and
There is built-in wireless Internet, though we use Ethernet, since it's there and more stable. We didn't have trouble getting this online -- did so wholly automatically -- using either option.
My one gripe is the speaker wire input system. Our previous Yamaha had a much more robust input system, while this has tiny, hard to insert and narrow twist grips. We had issues with the receiver thinking there was a short/surge and turning itself off when trying to connect the speaker wire directly. This was all eliminated when we used banana clips (see: Sewell Silverback Banana Plugs ) on our speaker wire and plugged them in that way, which is overall more convenient anyway, but it's somewhat annoying that they just couldn't make better connectors. (Our previous model worked perfectly for seven-plus years with its better speaker wire inputs.)
Also, the Zone Two speaker inputs can NOT be used with the banana clips, so the pinch system is all you've got. Since our speaker wire is high quality and fairly thick, it was a trick to get a good connection here and I found it frustrating, but we did get it up and running and haven't had any problems so far. Still, the speaker connection quality is my main gripe with this unit.
Overall, for the relatively low price, this is a feature-rich, high quality 4K, two-zone A/V receiver I can definitely recommend that does everything we need it to do for less than $500.

If you don't need HDCP 2.2, then this is an EXCELLENT choice
Reviewed in the United States on 4 December 2015Style Name: ReceiverVerified Purchase
If you do not need HDCP 2.2, meaning, you don't have 4k sources, then this is an incredible receiver. Fantastic sound. Easy to set up. I have mine paired with some nice Polk towers and a Polk center, and it sounds incredible. Wifi works well. I won't be buying a 4k TV for a very long time...1080p is just fine for me, so I'm not interested in 4k right now and won't be buying 4k sources. I have a Sony W900 TV, a Fire TV box, a Tivo Roamio, PS3 and PS4 all hooked up to this receiver, and it works brilliantly. So just make sure you do your research before buying. Think about what devices you will be hooking up. This supports HDMI 2.0 cables, which are backward compatible, but it DOES NOT support HDCP 2.2, and it doesn't claim to. I'm not sure why people are giving 2-star reviews for no HDCP 2.2...they should have done their research before buying. This is a fantastic, well-made product.

Love this thing, It's like a new girlfriend
Reviewed in the United States on 23 September 2015Style Name: ReceiverVerified Purchase
I have purchased more receivers over the past 5 years than I care to admit, and I can honestly say this is the best. I'm not going to get into the audio specs, THD, Watts Per Channel and the like, but from a functional standpoint this is the best receiver I've ever owned. When a friend mentioned "Network Receiver" to me a couple of years ago, my reaction was "why would I want that?", but it's actually a great feature. You can "AirPlay" directly from the iPhone, and even without AirPlay you can select from hundreds of internet based radio channels free of charge, many with very few ads, directly from the receiver's free app. The biggest selling point is actually the Zone2 feature. I've got Zone2 hooked up to outdoor speakers, and Zone1 is in the living room for the TV surround sound. You can "AirPlay" to Zone2 while someone else is using the TV and Zone1 without affecting each other. You can control the volume on Zone2 independently of Zone1 right from the iPhone app. Very cool. There are some very basic routing restrictions, for example you can't play an HDMI source out to Zone2, but there are enough inputs that you can pretty much get everything accessible to both zones. I have an AppleTV plugged into Zone1 via HDMI and also plugged into the receiver via analog inputs so that while I'm watching TV I can use the AppleTV on Zone1 and when I want to use it for iTunes I can still route it to Zone2 for music outside. The onscreen setup is first rate.

Revised Review: Failures After 4 Years
Reviewed in the United States on 6 June 2016Style Name: ReceiverVerified Purchase
NEW REVIEW: I know - I shouldn't expect modern consumer electronics to last more than a few years, but I guess I'm old fashioned. I really liked this receiver a lot but after 4 years, the ARC HDMI output and the Subwoofer Output failed permanently or began malfunctioning. I'm told I need to change the internal board at great expense. Really disappointing.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: I've had this receiver for over 6 months with no issues. I find that purchasing receivers these days seems like the luck of the draw as all manufacturers seem to produce a significant number of lemons (see how many you can find without a significant percentage of "1" ratings), and lousy tech support seems to be the rule, rather than the exception, so I purchased additional warranty protection this time, which is something I never do. (I had had a lot of problems with a Marantz receiver I purchased even after a warranty repair so I decided to return to my tried-and-true go-to brand: Yamaha.) I've had a conventional Yamaha two speaker stereo receiver for a few years and it still works and sounds great and needed a home theater sound system for the living room. I didn't plan on buying a model with lots of bells and whistles but this one came up on sale around Thanksgiving at the price of a simpler model and this one allows you to connect your speaker wires with banana jacks (which I really prefer) and the reviews were very good, so I bought this one. It is so easy to use and to program and the sound is great. You want the button that says "TV" to switch your viewing to TV instead of, say, the radio? Just put the TV on your screen and hold down the "TV" button on the remote. No worries after that. Want the sound program when you watch TV to always default to 7.1 instead of "SciFi?" Just put TV on the screen, adjust the sound program with the program key on the remote to the one you want, and then hold the TV key down until the receiver says "Set Complete." From now on, every time you press "TV" on the remote, the TV video feed will come up with the sound program (sound landscape) of your preference. (On my last receiver, I had to wade into the weeds into sub-sub menus to reconfigure the defaults to get to where I wanted to go. Not the case here.) When you're programming the BD/DVD and TV and other buttons, I recommend pressing the "Enhancer" button on the remote and programming with this function switched on. This will uncompress the compressed sound signal from many sources whereby you lose range and other characteristics (which is why some people prefer analogue LPs to digital CDs). You can press this on and off on the remote while you're listening and see the difference for yourself. Pushing internet radio and regular radio is easy, too, though this model won't stream your MP3s from your cell phone unless you purchase a blue tooth accessory. Since I don't need this type of functionality, I didn't care about this.
I recommend manual set up for the speakers. I've never had much luck with the set-up microphones that test the sound and then set the levels for you. Manual worked out much better for me and is not hard to do. Just set the speakers to levels where you can't tell where the sound is coming from. In my view, those are the right levels.
I downloaded the mobile phone app and it is pretty cool though in my case, it doesn't add much because the remote does everything I need. I use this receiver with an Oppo BD/DVD/CD player and Energy 5.1 speakers, all from Amazon, and it all sounds great. At 22.1 pounds, this receiver is a beast. So far so good!
