Let me first say that I understand these are made in China and was not expecting much in terms of materials/construction quality
I bought these for the glass and Zeiss design.
However, I was not expecting the composite body construction to be so weak, that the strap eyelet would so easily break off during normal use.
Yes, these feel like expensive Zeiss binoculars in your hands. The weight is due to the nice Schott ED glass. That same glass also makes for a bright, sharp view.
However, what Zeiss did was to effectively take a set of child's toy binoculars you'd find at a dollar store (as in a party pack of 3 binoculars for $1) and set some nice glass into it.... and then cut corners on the production of the original toy binoculars to make even more profit.
In a pinch, needing to use our binoculars, I used superglue to repair and reinforce the eyelet which disintegrated in 3 places (once it starts to break, it crumbles apart). Luckily it binds well to standard liquid superglue.
When I got home, I contacted Zeiss customer service and reported the issue in depth. i wanted to know how to avoid having the other eyelet break. I wanted to know if this was defect or (intentional cheap) design. I wanted to let them know that their overseas operations are potentially detracting from their reputation.
I received a response from a representative that simply told me to send it in for repair. I hesitate to do this because I'm sure the next unit will have the same problem. The construction is just that cheap.
These get 0 stars for the build quality, 5 stars for the glass/design... and rounded down to two stars for the lack of interest by Zeiss customer service for their defective product.
If you decide to buy these, I recommend either not using the straps, or reinforcing the eyelets with superglue.
Or maybe consider modifying the eyelets to replace them with a stronger alternative from some nice toy binoculars.
I attached some pictures that will show you the break and a surefire way to reinforce the eyelets with superglue.. you can use a sharpie to darken in the white glue.
edit: 9/21/2017
After using these for some time, I have to say that we're very pleased with them. The superglue on the eyelets held up.
The bright, sharp view, comfort, and ease of getting something into focus pretty quickly has been fantastic. I think overall we are satisfied with the value and I have brought it up +1 star.
Even now, I can't say I would recommend them to anyone, but I would definitely buy if I stumbled across a (discounted) used pair of these binoculars in good condition!

Nature-Watching Binocular

Review by Paula G. I had been using a 20-year-old pair of Steiner binoculars for birding. After doing research and using a friend’s pair of Zeiss I purchased these. The instructions and schematics are easy to follow. I like the hinged hard carrying case that I am able to secure to my belt as I switch from bino to camera. The neck strap is a nice edition but I have upgraded to a more substantial one. I wear eyeglasses and had no trouble adjusting these for my field of vision. WOW. The clarity and resolution are magnificent. I have only used these three times since purchase but am very happy with these.

Feels solid as if it was a more expensive product....but with issues
Reviewed in the United States on 27 August 2014Size: 10 X 42Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
Great binoculars for the money..in fact, first I wasn't sure why there is so much price difference between this Terra and their Conquest HD, which I owned before as well.....there sure doesn't seem to be much difference in quality and optical performance, as the difference in price might suggest.
The Terra ED feels solid....compact and light, feels good in the hands....provides great optical performance - I also tested it in low light conditions and was very happy with it.
But I guess the fact that its manufactured in China (vs Germany) brings the price down right there....time will tell, if there are any issues...but I do trust Zeiss and their Quality Control....so far, this product feels like they did a great job..
I am taking it to the Yellowstone Nat.Park in a few days where I will be testing it some more together with my Zeiss Dialyt spotting scope.
Sept 08/2014 update:
after using the binuculars for over a week (including Yellowstone), I noticed when twisting/turning the eye cups, it slides beyond the point when its supposed to stop....it did feel kinda stiff when i turned the eye cups right at the beginning, but I thought maybe that's the way its supposed to be..until I visited Cabela's and another store and compared with other Terra models.....so when i turn the eye cups, its very stiff and when it reaches the maximum point where it should stop, it does keep turning....apparently, the glued part underneath isnt holding.....so i am returning the binoculars...optically though, I like it.plus its light and compact and it feels good in the hands...so, i am thinking about getting another model....it appears, i just got one bad egg...hopefully, the next one will be OK
Sept 19/ 2014 update:
I compared the Terra with Conquest HD side by side for two days....exposed it to different conditions...during the day, at dusk/dawn...at night..etc...and I must say, i honestly couldn't see much difference in optical performance between the two models...
Also, the Terra feels better in my hands...its slightly lighter and i like how compact it is....
now, I am debating which one to keep, and if the Conquest is worth the double cost. Optically, I dont see it justified to pay 2x the money for the Conquest, as the Terra really does a great job...but the issue with the eye cups made me cautious....more info to follow soon
October 22, 2014 update:
I decided to go with the Conquest 10x42HD. Although I liked the Terra as well (maybe even better due to light weight and good overall performance), but the issue with eye cups made me cautious of possible lack of good Quality Control at their facility in China. Thus, I decided to go with their higher priced upgrade and made in Germany binoculars = Conquest 10x42.
The Conquest feels very solid. From my experience with other made-in-Germany products, you cant beat their quality control.
To me that's the key, as I fear I might run into other issues with the Terra later on when the 5-year warranty expires.
As I dont buy expensive optics every day, i believe this Zeiss Conquest 10x42 offers enough great features to stay with me for the next few decades, so that i dont get tempted to spend more money on other binoculars..:-)

Excellent binoculars for the money. Sharp, clear, lots of light. A nice size and not too heavy. Can wear all day. I had these in 8 x 42 and love having the extra power, 10X 42, in the same size as the 8's. Great for birding.

The optics are very good, especially for the price

The optics are very good, especially for the price. The adjustable eye-cups help a lot, and these binocs focus really well. The lens guards are slightly clunky but that doesn't really get in the way. I would have liked a more robust case as well, but again, not really a problem.
