Now, he is saddled with a project he never wanted: the Ridgeway Viking Trust. Its shady leaders tell him there’s treasure buried in the rolling Northumberland Hills — they just need one more payout to reach it.
But is there more to the Trust than meets the eye?
Muck-raking journalist Alan Crickley seems to think so. He’s got the scent of corruption and he’s on the trail . . .
Until the day he drives his car into a ditch, a stone’s throw from the dig.
A coincidence? An accident? Or something more sinister?
Fans of Elly Griffiths, Peter James, P.D. James, Damien Boyd, Helen H. Durrant, J.D. Kirk, Bill Kitson and Peter Robinson will devour this intriguing mystery.

THE DETECTIVE
Planning Officer Arnold Landon is inhibited and painfully aware of his lack of academic credentials. He lives in the North East of England and as self-taught archaeologist he confounds academic experts with his detailed knowledge, which involves him in a local murder. His expertise brings him promotion to the Archaeology Department where he meets frustration, which he nevertheless overcomes by making important discoveries of ancient artefacts while playing a leading role in solving local crimes. A succession of opportunities for further promotion pass him by because of his desire to remain in touch with the detailed history of sites in Northumberland and this leads to more conflict, first with his inadequate superior and then with the stunningly beautiful Karen Stannard and, later in his career, the Italian archaeologist Carmela Cacciatore.

Another well researched Arnold Landon Mystery
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 November 2021Verified Purchase
Arnold is building a strong reputation as an amateur archaeologist and has won respect of professionals in that field. As the books progress he is moved from department to department as his bosses are generally incompetent and do not like Arnold unwittingly getting the Limelight. At the end of this book he looks set for another move as his latest boss, a glamorous Lesbian, feels threatened by him and believes, unfairly that he is after her job as the Deputy Director. As usual Roy Lewis keeps you guessing and wanting to turn the pages.

So sad!

A man’s life ruined - hard prison time. A stupid death. Greedy people deceiving an elderly lady. They so nearly get away with it all, too. But thanks to Arnold’s horrible boss, he is in place to solve it all and get a cracking new job offer too! Onward.

Likeable Hero
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 October 2021Verified Purchase
This series of books is just perfect if you want an easy read and one where you get to know the main character.
Arnold our hero is always in the wrong place and bodies start to appear.
I am greatly enjoying the series and am always looking forward to the next one coming out. The plots are a bit tenuous but still a good read.
Give them a go but do start with the first one.
Enjoy
