Well it could either be a defective drive , cable or usb port. Try the drive and cable on another PC. Also check the voltage on your USB ports.

I think that the HDMI port on a TV is only going to have a video out signal, no USB I/O.

I bought this almost a year ago. However, I remember that it came with all original paperwork etc. I am very happy with it. Only one draw back - it comes with the US power cable & plug. If you are outside the US you will need an adapter.

Every WD desktop HDD I've ever bought has come with a complete set of slip-in adapters for the plugs. This one should be no exception, so best contact Amazon as I can't see any note on the item that this is an EU-only device.

usb port on computer... As I understand it. Advantage that does not have to be connected to power supply.
