Philips Hue say you can not, because the plug is designed for appliances that pull low amps. That are not designed for say a fridge or washing machine

You will need to unfortunately. I have mine in a double wall socket and it encroaches on the second plug socket by quite a bit. i cannot even put a normal household plug in beside it.

Yes, via the Hue hub. It can also be paired with some other zigbee hubs (I'm using Conbee) but do a search online to check your specific one if it's not hue.
