I have only downloaded podcasts as mp3, although I beleive wav format is also possible.
A quick duck duck go search says that you cannot directly download Spotify songs and play them other than in the Spotify app. (ie not on a dap device)

However there is software to get round this ...

All my music so far comes from CDs I burned to the laptop.

It is true with the one I bought. You can access the music through two different folders, both have faults. One rearranges the songs (as mentioned), and the other puts the Artists in the order you loaded them (not alphabetical). Besides this issue, it is a great device and the sound is amazing.
