Samantha Barrett, Senior Business Development Manager, knows how to get the best out of her Alexa – from morning routine hacks to husband-wrangling and reminding loved ones she cares.
Morning must-have: skipping in the shower
“I have an Echo Dot in my bathroom, which is where I spend most of my time getting ready, so I use it to catch up on news stories, have Alexa read my calendar or control music while I’m in the shower. Wet hands and technology don’t mix, so it’s a good way to skip past songs I don’t like.”
"Alexa, read my calendar”
"Alexa, play some music”
"Alexa, play news from ABC News”
Favourite features: sport and leisure
“I tend to listen to the latest book on Audible, which syncs up with different devices, so I have it play on my Echo Show. My husband uses it to stream live AFL match commentary when the games are on or listen to a podcast.”
“Alexa, play my book"
“Alexa, ask AFL to listen to the game”
“Alexa, play the footy”
The essentials: high-level husband training
“My husband and I use the shopping list function all the time. We have an Echo Show in the kitchen and add items to it as they run out from the fridge or cupboard. I make sure that list is texted to him when he does the weekly shop, which has definitely reduced arguments and forgetfulness!"
"Alexa, add milk and eggs to my shopping list"
“Alexa, what’s on my shopping list?”
“Alexa, create a shopping list”
Game-changer: befriending Alexa
“When you ask, ‘What’s the weather?’ Alexa’s starting to add more personality around a little quip based on the weather like ‘Enjoy the sunshine!’. It’s nice to get not just the answer you’re looking for but a more personalised response. It makes it feel less robotic and more like a friend in your home.”
“Alexa, what’s the weather?”
“Alexa, good morning”
“Alexa, how are you?”
Surprise & delight! Hidden messages
“My brother recently moved out on his own and I helped him set up his Sonos One with Alexa. He was super-pleased that we could actually set up a reminder to take his bins out every Tuesday night when he gets home from work. While I was helping him set up that reminder, I set up a little surprise one for him as well. So every Thursday Alexa wakes up and reminds him that I love him, which I thought was pretty cute.”
“Alexa, remind me to put the bins out”
“Alexa, set a reminder”
“Alexa, surprise me”
