I have several of these in my house. I have used them as access points to extend the range of my wifi as opposed to using them as an extender. An extender takes your router/modem wifi signal and pushes it further to areas that may have weak (or nil) wifi connectivity. An access point is where you plug a TP-link TL-WA850RE into a wired ethernet/internet outlet. To do this I have to point out that my house has ethernet cables running to ethernet ports - these aren't being used by anyone to plug in computers etc so I have plugged in the TP-Link TL-WA850RE. This means that the wifi in these areas is now the same strength as though you are sitting next to the modem.
