I made myself a pact this week that I’d write more book reviews. I figured the authors, who bleed their heart and souls into their work, deserved it. And then along came From Blood and Ash which unequivocally deserves 5 stars. I’d give it more if I could.
I should mention, I’m not a 5-star abuser—I can be a fussy bitch. Also, I’ve never read anything by Jennifer Armentrout previously, which I’m feeling pretty embarrassed about. How did I not know this amazing woman existed?? Needless to say, I’m now fan-girling big time.
I tore through From Blood and Ash. DE-VOURED it!
I won’t bother telling you the plot, although it is awesome, because you can glean that from the blurb. But I will tell you that I thoroughly happily (a wee nod to chapter 3 right there) enjoyed every moment of it. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced such a sustained visceral response to a book. If Poppy’s heart was pounding, so was mine; if she tingled, I got goose bumps; and if her eyes watered, I had to blink fast just so I could keep reading. The writing was that good!
The scenes involving Poppy and Hawke were just…flawless. The characters jumped from the page and I found myself re-reading some parts so I could experience them all over again, sigh. The dialogue between the two was a standout and often had me smiling. I love a little humour peppered throughout an otherwise dark and intense plot.
So, thank you, Jennifer Armentrout, for writing your heart story. I’m so damn glad you did.
