"On Jiu Jitsu" seeks to codify the mechanisms by which Jiu Jitsu shapes the individual, as the character traits required to achieve mastery in sport are the same which our highest humanity requires. It is the hope of the author that the articulation of these benefits will ensure the reader's continued practice of self-mastery through this sacred medium.
I wanted to be deeply transparent about why I wrote this book, and why you should take time out of your day to read it. There were two primary motivations that led to its creation.
First, I wrote this book as a sales pitch for Jiu Jitsu – the book you read to remind yourself of the value of your training, articulating why this time must be seen as sacred and protected from the countless responsibilities vying for your attention. To the degree that we consciously understand the worth of this practice, our discipline muscles become capable of combating the Resistance that comes with any worthwhile pursuit. What “The War of Art” is for writers, may this book be for the sincere Jiu Jitsu practitioner. Once we recognize the value of Jiu Jitsu, many of us become evangelists on its behalf. We have found something transformative which we know can benefit the people we love. Our obstacle lies in communicating the value of an experience which someone has never had. How can we convey the transformative nature of Jiu Jitsu to someone who has never stepped foot on the mat? This is the book that you would give to such a friend to get them on the mat and into the next phase of their life. I know deep in my bones that the more people who train Jiu Jitsu with the philosophies described herein, the better the world becomes. I have been witness to this truth for the last 13 years. This book is my most recent attempt to increase the number of sincere Jiu Jitsu practitioners worldwide.
Second, I wrote this book to challenge you to bring the sincerity and attention that you embody on the mat into the rest of your life. We advance in Jiu Jitsu faster than any other discipline. The standard of continuous improvement, the incorporation of lessons learned from failures, and the workman’s like approach we bring to our training are all virtues which we exude on the mat that must transcend into our relationships, profession, and responsibilities. When we approach our lives with the same demand for progress that we show our Jiu Jitsu, we create an entirely different experience of being alive. If either of these motivations speak to you, buy this book now. You'll love it.
