I absolutely adore HONY I have followed the authors journey for years on social media and love the rawness and authenticity. Brandon sure has a knack for sharing. Love gifting this book when I don't know what else to gift.
This is an excellent book and a true evolution or step beyond on the previous art photography books of the series before now, as Brandon Stanton says in the introduction to this book, it is now not just about shots of people and a sentence but their speaking at greater length.
Stanton does a great job of selection and arrangement of the pictures and stories in the book too, so a natural flow and pace is established with each new picture and the tales which accompany it. The book as a result is highly readable and not simply an interesting table book (not that I would depreciate any of the previous books in contrast to this one, every one of them exudes a humanity, warmth and interest, a certain spirit, when this real begins to resonate with the reader it is not difficult to see how Stanton was considered one of the top thirty beneath thirty among creatives).
In particular I thought the placing of pictures of Obama and his own hopeful thinking next to a more joe average character and his much, much more pessimistic thinking was interesting, though that is only one example, I liked pretty much everything this book had to offer. Recommended.
I pre-ordered the book a few days ago for my girlfriend and just got it! Her words about it are "Amazing, touching and inspiring. Brandon did it again. Great print quality!". I don't think there is anything I can add - I can't wait to get my hands on it and read it!
Amazing life lessons from the eyes of everyday people that have nothing to hide or lose when speaking to the photographer. The photos of the book are very very good and helps you visualise many things that people describe on their short interviews. Recommended to people that feel they cannot overcome their problems and feel a little bit lost. There are people out there facing the same or worst problems than ourselves, sometimes it helps read about them and visualise them.
I only recently discovered Brandon Stanton's page on Facebook. I love his work, I love how he brings people together from all around the world all with concern for and an opinion about the current subject.
Bought this as a Christmas gift for my mum and she was glued to it on boxing day. It's a big, heavy, hard back book. The quality of the pictures is very high. Overall a very nice coffee table type book that you can just open at a random page and gain an insight into a strange mind/life.
If you want an idea of the content, you could have a look at their facebook page. It's great!
The stories in this book cover a myriad of human life. They are inspiring, humbling, heartbreaking, funny, intriguing, enlightening - you name it! The photographs are sensitive and thought-provoking and the layout is well-conceived and clever. This is a book I return to time and again. Highly recommended.
