Just purchased the Kindle version of this book. However, I already have the 3rd edition of the RSPB Handbook of British Birds in my Kindle library, an excellent field guide as you would expect from the RSPB. Although we are known as bird ‘watchers’ we often need to use our ears to detect and identify birds, particularly in woodland and dense scrub. So. when I read the write up “Optimised for tablets, it features the Handbook in crisp, clear high-resolution…….In addition, the epub edition features songs, calls and other sounds from each species, making this the ultimate one-stop resources for anyone interested in identifying and learning more about the birds they see”. I therefore had no hesitation in ordering and downloading to my tablet. You can imagine my disappointment when I discovered my Samsung Android tablet did not support the audio content, “There is audio content at this location that is not currently supported for your device”. I now have two identical versions of the RSPB Handbook of British Birds but £3.32 less in my bank account. We don't all have Apple iPads so please get your act together guys. So ‘buyer beware’ there may be others out there who use these little known, obscure Android devices that cannot play “songs, calls and other sounds from each species” from their new RSPB Handbook of British Birds.
The only reason I bought this was for the audio - I used the kindle app on my mac and there is a message saying that the audio isn't available for my device. Last time I looked I had considerable audio capabilities on my 2018 iMac so this is rubbish and I feel as if I have been conned
This is NOT a book for Identifying birds. It is a List of birds beginning with a Mute Swan. The Ebook pictures can NOT be enlarged and the descriptions are too SMALL to read. I wish I could get a refund. I cannot comment on the audio, because I have a Kindle Ebook and the sounds cannot be heard. It is a book of information, searching the web would be easier.
I ordered this on Sunday as my family was coming to visit me and we were going to the RSPB reserve in Conwy today (Tuesday). The book arrived yesterday and I looked through it to see how it listed the different species of birds. I took it today and although we did not see too many birds my grandchildren did look up some of the ducks we saw as well as gulls and swifts etc. I am very happy with it and it does not have all the European birds in it that some books do which makes it harder I think to find your bird. Just British birds.
This works OK on my Kindle Fire HD 10, but can be tricky to navigate. The menus which allow you to search, so you can look up a bird (which is mostly how people use guides like this) can be a little tricky to bring up; you have to swipe in the right area of the screen or it just turns the page. The sound files are a great idea, and my device has no problem playing them. I'd like to see the kindle version improved so some kind of menu can be permanently displayed (it isn't a novel, after all), and a title showing which bird you're currently on, along with the previous and next birds.
This Kindle edition is a big disappointment. I feel that an eBook bird guide should make identification in the field easier but with this edition unless you know what you're looking for identification is not easy. There is good information about individual birds but sadly the bird sound feature doesn't work in the Android Kindle edition. Look elsewhere if you want an eBook bird identification book or stick to your old paper edition.
I bought this for my wife as a replacement for our much-used 2002 edition. We are delighted with it but a little puzzled by the fact that the description on Amazon gives a publication date of November 2018 while the book itself gives 2014 with no mention of revisions/updates. It is a good buy nonetheless.
This looks like a very informative book, and I bought it on the recommendations of much more knowledgeable reviewers. However, be aware that the bird sounds do not play on all tablets - I have not been able to find out why, but on mine I get a message "There is audio content at this location that is not currently supported for your device". If anyone else knows why this is, please post a comment!
