I found this book really hit and miss. I was a complete beginner to macrame and found it easier to learn the basic knots on YouTube as it’s quite hard to demonstrate that in an illustration, so I bought the book mostly for the patterns. Some projects I found easy to follow (like the Indra) whereas in others, she starts with detailed instructions and then just gets spectacularly vague. For example, for the Vera it actually says ‘finish off the diamonds’. For such a large and detailed pattern I needed guidance on how many clove hitches to do etc - I ended up guessing.
It also assumes you know how to do certain things that aren’t explained. For example, the Aurora dream catcher starts by tying larks head knots around the circle - but it says nowhere how to do this. The cord length for the circle was also completely wrong and I ran out and had to restart it. It also starts by telling you how many clove hitches to do in each row and then stops, simply telling you to ‘do 2 more rows’ without mention of how many clove hitches. This lack of detail has a knock on effect to the whole pattern later on if you do it a bit wrong.
For the wall hanging on the cover, it ends by telling you to do overhand knots using just five working cords. It took me about half an hour of frustration of trying to work out how to do that as it’s not explained anywhere.
It’s such a shame certain patterns are vague and assuming because the finished products do look nice (once I’ve had to do a bit of guesswork!)
I started making the Flora plant pot holder but I found the written instructions very vague and not very helpful. For example, it mentions the reader to do a SK, but there is no explicit SK (there are different types) in the book. I needed to check online in the end. The crown knot at the end was even harder to comprehend. It would have been better if the book provided more step by steps for the knots themselves to break it down the explanation in the text.
Great place to go to if you have some basic experience. Got some knots in but the majority are large projects and not a great deal of variability like jewellery or keychains. Good for wall hangings and pot holders.
The patterns are cool, a good beginner section, I was slightly annoyed because the dimensions are only in inches. I wish there was a section on how to start crafting your own designs at the end. More picture of the process needed.
