1.0 out of 5 starsFairly dull book
Reviewed in Australia on 9 December 2021
I didn’t find it a compelling read given the existing literature on CD, DevOps, and transformation. It’s largely focused on explaining how the research supports everything we already know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good motivation for DevOps, but not much practical guidance

Whereas the DevOps Handbook tells you *how* to implement efficient software delivery teams and organisations, this book concentrates on empirical evidence as to *why* you should, in business terms. As such it's very much an overview of the subject and is probably best suited to a senior management / c-level audience concerned with strategy and business outcomes. Having said that, it still has interesting insights for those involved at the coal face, but not to the extent of the handbook by some of the same authors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why Devops matters
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 August 2019

As other reviewers have stated this book isn't about how to do devops per se, this is about why it's important for your organisation in terms of team performance and ultimately business outcomes. For me, this has validated the direction we are going within my teams and given me academic quality evidence, that's been peer-reviewed, to counter resistance that we might meet to this transformation. I would definitely recommend it on that basis.

Decent read but prefer the DevOps Handbook for more immediate action planning, that is more practical. This may be better suited for managers than delivery folk.

4.0 out of 5 stars Broad guidelines to adopt DevOps with an excellent example

It is important to understand two things with respect to the book (I am a DevOps practitioner and author as well) - who is the intended reader? how is it relevant?
As for the question on reader, IT org leaders and evangelists would be the target. The book covers a set of best practices, with examples and supporting research methods, for adopting DevOps in an enterprise. However, actual on-ground adoption will still take a lot of effort (and further reading) to be successful. The example at the end of the chapter on transformation in a large enterprise, is a bold step by the org's management; not a cup of tea for most of the orgs yet, except in specific departments.
As for the relevance, this book is more to bring in a scientific research viewpoint to the world of IT. However, not something that the IT mass would be able to easily appreciate or comprehend. In 2016-17, the book was extremely relevant to charge up organizations to hop on to their DevOps journeys. Now in 2019, they need to do more - more than what the book says. The authors have taken great pain in correlating aspects of human culture to software engineering, and have done it more or less well - though lot of research in this area would be required for a more convincing story.
One of the good takeaways are the names of people who have contributed to the world of DevOps, as mentioned across the sections in the book. This gives a good insight on their contributions and how things have evolved.

4.0 out of 5 stars Muy útil para obtener métricas.

If you are currently working at Netflix, Google, or Amazon in product engineering this book might not provide much insight. But for the rest of us this book shows in a scientific way the steps organization need to take to accelerate their digital output and gain the capability to stay relevant in the new digital economy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, helped me organize my thoughts

I enjoyed reading this book. There was nothing completely new, but it organized it all in a logical framework that helped me.
I took many notes and to-do's.
The book offers surveys as the main tool to measure current state and progress. Even though the logic for that is explained in chapter 13 and 14, I expected other more objective KPI's.
