Berwald's Symphony #3 (Sinfonie Singuliere) is one of the finest of all symphonies by Scandinavian composers - it's right up there with the best symphonic works by Nielsen, Sibelius and Swenson. It's incredibly dynamic and lyrical. The propulsive first movement is awesome!
The accompanying piano concerto and Symphony #4 are pleasant but not in the same league as the Symphony #3. I can't say for sure but I would guess that there's nothing comparable to the #3 in all of Berwald's works. It's truly singular and memorable.
This Naxos recording by the Helingsborg Symphony Orchestra exhibits excellent sound and deep sonority. Bought used, my CD skips a bit in the piano concerto but that is small potatoes next to the wondrous experience of hearing the #3.
