I acquired this CD on the strength of so many glowing review, from so many different quarters, over decades of time as to the strengths and wonders of Karajan's renditions of the Shostakovich No. 10! (Note: This recording was made Nov. 1966, the earlier of the two versions Karajan produced of this work.) And, once I heard it ... meh; same old von Karajan schlock as can be heard on the other 1,000 or so recordings he made. (The only composer I have ever cared to hear Karajan do is Sibelius.) This is possibly the greatest symphony Shostakovich wrote, and there are many outstanding recordings of it to be had; this, in my opinion, is NOT one of them! I would like to be able to say just what it is I find so bad, but I cannot -- in fact, this is just plain insipid, uninspired, and flat, not for any particular reason, it just is. Should Karajan be your man, I suppose this would fit your liking perfectly, but that is not the opinion I have.
Collectors should look elsewhere. While it may be a minority opinion, my favorite still is Ormandy / Philadelphia, especially on the 2-CD release which features what also may be the best every version of Symphony No. 4
Shostakovich: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 10 (Essential Classics)
. Another powerful performance, though in less than top-notch sound, is from Mravinsky
. I have recently become familiar with one by Jarvi, an exciting performance with very good audio
Shostakovich: Symphony 10 / Ballet Suite 4
. A stunning, live performance from April 1982 is turned in by Rozhdestvensky
Gennady Rozhdestvensky Conducts Shostakovich
. I am not all that thrilled by Haitink / LPO from 1977, but he still beats Karajan by a mile
Shostakovich: The Complete Symphonies - Concertgebouw Orchestra / London Philharmonic Orchestra / Bernard Haitink
. There are many more out there, including a later one from Karajan in digital sound which I am not familiar with.
