Disappointing and wayward

This is not how to play Mendelssohn. Tempos are too fast and, worse, wayward, fluctuating seemingly at the whim of the players, not the conductor. Abbado apparently sees Mendelssohn as all fluff and sparkle, and while this accusation may have some truth in it you destroy any seriousness if you emphasise that: you bring out the worst and deny the best. A poor buy.
