The MC-DC2 allows you to fire the flash while I'm standing away from the camera (thus reducing camera shake, especially if you're using non-VR lenses). This took a bit of practice on my part, but seems to work a treat now.
This remote has a big advantage over others in that it has a two stage button. It works just like the on one the camera. A half press for focussing and then a second stage to take the picture. The only drawback is that lead is only a metre long. So taking a self portrait is bit limiting. However you always have the self timer function if you want to take that type of picture.
Straightforward to use compared to some more complex remote triggers, which is useful when working in low light or bad weather. It's a bit fiddly to fit the connector into the camera, though, particularly in low light or bad weather.
Does what it's supposed to. Basic, but solid. The cable could be longer, but otherwise, no complaints. It costs a little more than third party equivalents, but it's not outrageously expensive- sometimes it's nice to have "the real deal".
Edit: It's worth mentioning that this works fine with a D7100 too- which isn't made clear everywhere.
Nicely made but basically straightforward piece of kit so I can't see a need to sing and dance about it. I would add though that the cord release does have it's benefits over the IR remote. I bought this item because I found that the IR remote which I originally got is not really very handy when you are behind the camera, which often occurs for macro or wildlife shots. It will only fire when in front. This cord is great for exactly those situations.
