I hope Amazon read these reviews as well! I bought the Roberts Solar DAB 2 radio for two reasons, brand reputation and for the ability to solar charge. My wife is caring for C-19 patients in one of the London Hospitals and is having to stay in nursing accommodation (Infection Risk). There is great demand for the one or two plug sockets that they use. So thought a solar radio would be ideal. The problem is that it only seems to hold a charge on the new rechargeable batteries of about an hour, not the 20 hrs as stated in the instructions. I tried to contact Roberts by phone and email and am still waiting for a reply. All I can say Roberts if this is how you build radios, I hope you have nothing to do with building ventilators. Sorry Amazon if I do not hear anything back from Roberts this will be a return.
Nice design and quite well made but battery life awful. In full sun all day with clear blue sky you may get a few hours use thats all. The solar panel is woefully inadequate to charge the batteries. Really disapointing purchase and for 80 quid feel like ive had my pants well and truly pulled down. Also a horrible tinny distorted sound if turned up above say half-3/4 volume. Avoid unless they are giving one away...
I bought this because it is a Robert and came with great reviews. I bought it for DAB radio in our caravan which has awful FM reception. It worked well for a couple of months but then stopped charing via solar. I thought it may be the batteries so replaced them with high quality chargeable duracells but still didn't work tried finally to charge using the power cable but the radio has died. I think we probably got no more that a couple of weekends use out of it. Absolutely rubbish
I purchased this radio at Christmas 2012, and although looks to be well made I'm very disappointed with the sound quality.I find the sound to be very dull and without any sparkle, it's as if all the treble sounds have been taken out, I don't see any obvious way of adjust it to improve the treble as there is no bass / treble knob.
Do not buy this radio if you want a portable radio. Although it has rechargeable batteries and a solar panel it is completely useless unless permanently plugged into the mains. The trouble shooting guide from Roberts website and the Roberts technical helpline were also useless, talking about conditioning the batteries and the batteries lasting for 20 hours use (user guide and trouble shooting guide) before the very in-technical person on the helpline said that it needs to be plugged into the AC supply all the time. I hope I am not too late to return it via Amazon. Not fit for purpose.
I used this radio happily for about 7 months, only having to recharge about once a fortnight, even though it wasn't positioned in the sunniest window sill. however, for the last 2 months it will only hold the charge for an hour of use - hopeless! So if you are not going to be getting plenty of sun you might want to consider another radio
Radio only used in the garden but charger lasted a little only past 1 year of use! It was noted by engineer speaker did not sound quite right and when returned a month later for a fault it was rejected so had to concede to £20 return fee. ...Not impressed
This was expected to be at least as reliable as other Roberts products I own. Instead, it randomly died, and only unpredictably woke up again. Clearly of no use. I sent it back, and bought a Pure DAB radio - so far, no problem!
