A great book. It reads like it is written by two old ladies, which it basically is. All bubbly enthusiasm for gardening and soil biology. Although not every technique or bit of information is correct for northern areas like Saskatchewan.
I first read this book as a digital edition checked borrowed from my library. I liked it so much I bought the hard copy. I’ve composted for decades and virtually no debris from my yard goes into a landfill. I thought I knew a lot about composting but this carefully researched book filled in some gaps and put wide range of techniques in one place in easily accessible format.
great ideas on composting. I taught composting in my little city for seven years. I didn't have as many good ideas as these authors do. I really enjoyed their attitude. I feel energized even though I don't have many perfect piles left in me. My only gripe was with the publisher because I found too many interrupted paragraphs -- paragraph should come to an end, but a photo or new section begins. Probably poor or hurried paste-up.I still give the content 5 stars.
My only experience with compost is with a worm bin and the store bought stuff. After reading other books (Let-it-Rot) and stuff online, I found this book targeted as a complete guide to be informed because things can go wrong.. Overall, I'm impressed with the clear content of information and the way the author keeps you interested in learning more. At the end of the book there is information on some garden crops as an added bonus. Another person directed me to Compost-for-Dummies which also sounds like it may be an alternative book to learn more about making your own compost.
The best book I've read on composting. It gave me a fresh look at the whole process and lots of new ways to manage and improve the outcome. I highly recommend this book to anyone . If you think you know it all read this and learn some new 'tricks'!
I must say that in the first few pages I laughed a little bit when I could hear the authors enthusiasm for poop and dirt almost leaping off of the pages. LOL however by the end of this book I was totally into it and quite surprised at how excited I am now to dive into dirt! I have learned many things and plan to continue to use this book as a reference as I farm and garden. This was an excellent book!
