I currently have a SoundAsleep pillow with inbuilt speak which works absolutely fine. Admittedly I need the volume up high on the radio to which it's connected but it's clear and quite loud enough. Only problem is that you can't wash the pillow and I've had it for a few years now and would love to be able to wash it. Thought the Roberts Radio Pillow would be a good replacement but it came nowhere near the volume of my current pillow speaker.
The speaker is a great size and the lead is a good length. It slides between two pillows easily so that you don't feel uncomfortable with your head on the speaker. The only problem is the volume. I tried it on my smartphone (Samsung Note 3) at max volume and could hear it OK if I pressed the speaker to my ear, putting it under the pillow made it silent. I also tried my stereo, DAB radio, laptop, and an iPad, and none of them were any better. The speaker also has three different settings and playing with this made no significant difference.
Reading the reviews the volume seems to either be a hit or a miss and nothing between. Mine was repackaged and awaiting collection within 30 minutes of opening it. One other thing is that it differed from the image in both colour and design, so it may have been an earlier model, even so I'd expect to be able to hear it.
I like Roberts, they're a good brand, I just don't like this product.
I'm now using JVC HA-S360 headphones (they fold flat) and they work really well. They are more expensive and with shorter lead but they are also cushioned something that the Roberts Pillow Talk speaker is not.

This product is a great idea but quite disappointing in reality. The volume was so low I needed to turn my radio up full blast to be able to hear anything at all. It most certainly wouldn't work under a pillow. I tried a replacement but it wasn't much better. Very surprising to get such poor quality from Roberts.
I have had three different pillow speakers over the years, and have not been able to hear any of them properly through my single flattish pillow. Although more than twice the price of previous speakers, sadly the Roberts speaker is no exception. I listen with the speaker on top of the pillow and below my ear, and although the Roberts speaker has good sound quality, it is too large and an uncomfortable shape. Therefore I am going back to my previous, cheaper pillow speaker.
This product is a great idea but the execution is not good. Even with the volume up full and new batteries etc. the sound is indistinct. Tried all 3 of the settings and multiple radios etc. I may look at a pre-amp...
I am quite disappointed in this as I have to have the radio turned up to full volume and have the speaker under a thin pillow to be able to hear it. I do have a slight hearing problem, but even with my good ear it is only just loud enough. Also I am unable to detect what difference the three positions for the switch at the top make. They are certainly not volume controls.
