I won't be the only half of a couple where the better half's delight in waking to radio 4's sniping and arguing is not a shared enthusiasm: I need at least a little breakfast first. I "solved" this rude awakening by getting a Pillow Talk speaker for the better half and then, about a year later realised that I not only was listening to relatively blissful silence every morning but I was equally not listening to the rowdy rubbish which would cheer up the morning a little more - just so that I didn't interrupt Little Boy Blue's morning snipefest. I got one for myself and now we ignore each other equally until brains are functioning. Perfect.
Two observations: 1. You need to have a headphone socket on your radio! 2. The volume needs to be higher through the headphones than when through the speaker - I imagine that will depend on the radio/radio alarmclock and the pillow/pillows that you use.
I bought this after it was advertised to me (probably via delicious cookies) on Facebook. I’m so glad I did. It’s exactly what I was hoping for. Slips nicely under the pillow and I can’t feel it, and it is nice and quiet so my sound engineer partner (with the hearing of a bat) isn’t disturbed, but if I position my ear directly over the speaker (with the pillow in between) I can hear my tv prog or music quite clearly.
I tend to listen to a tv show to fall asleep and at some point I just roll a bit away and it’s quiet enough that it doesn’t wake me if Netflix keeps playing the next episode of something!
It’s sturdily built, and the cable is very long and strong, I don’t think it will break easily.
I was put off by the bad reviews for this but I’m so glad I bought it, it’s so much better than EarPods which I either kept in my ears or in one ear, or even put on maximum volume and put under my pillow (and it still wasn’t clear) and every single time I used this method, the cable got tangled and one time I woke up with the earpod wire wrapped round me like 3 times.
Would 100% recommend this for an under pillow speaker. It would probably play sleepy sounds like ocean waves nicely. But if you’re looking for some thing to help you hear every nuance of a podcast or audio book, just stick with EarPods, this speaker is definitely for aiding sleep, not keeping you awake and entertained.
I've been pleasantly surprised by how well this works. The first impression was that it was bigger than I'd anticipated but as long as your pillows aren't too thin this shouldn't be a problem. I use this because I like to have something to listen to as I drop off to sleep and my girlfriend hasn't complained yet so any noise leakage from under my pillow is minimal.
The speaker has a good long cable on it so your source can easily be sat on a bedside table or on the floor next to the bed. It has 3 sound modes. 1 sounds good, 1 sounds good but has a bit too much bass for my liking and one sounds like you're listening underwater and seems useless as far as I can see.
The sound you get it pretty good considering it's coming through a pillow. I will say that it's effectiveness does seem to vary depending on the pillow I use. I have one which is a standard hollow fibre pillow and the sound comes through really well. I have another which is a down imitation synthetic pillow which doesn't let the sound through quite as well, but it is still okay.
Overall I'm very impressed and would recommend it.
My partner likes to listen to the radio at night - and I don't - so this is the perfect solution. This speaker is much more robust than others on the market, so it's worth the additional cost (still not that dear). Best thing is - my partner can hear the radio...but I cannot (previous 'cheaper' under pillow speakers did not come up to scratch on either front).
I have had a similar, cheaper, item before but it wasn't very satisfactory. Then I tried earphones (well on earphone - two are unmanageable imo) which are not very comfortable. The other disadvantage is that having cut off one earpiece a lot of the remastered 60's tracks on Tony Blackburn you would only hear the instruments and no vocal. This item has a switch that allows you to 'mix' both channels.!
This works well within the limitations of it being under your pillow - so the issues are more to do with the situation rather than the product. Being Roberts it seems to be well constructed and functions OK. You do need to have the volume on the radio whacked up quite high and it's still not very loud - but I guess most of us are using this to avoid disturbing partners so you don't want it loud.
In summary it works well for me and does what I bought it for but not for you if you are wanting hi-fidelity music.
Fantastic little product. A must for anyone still using earphones/headphones. I was cautious after reading mixed reviews but this under pillow speaker has more than enough power to be heard through a pillow. I will point out that I think where people have had concerns about volume is when listening to recordings that might not have been very loud - one (old) episode of a radio 4 dramatisation of Sherlock Holmes was too quiet to listen to but, again, that was the recording rather than the speaker.
You cannot feel this under the pillow and what I especially like is that it doesn't require plugging in so I feel happy with it under the pillow, not worrying about it overheating.
I sent for this product as I have to listen to audio books/podcasts etc in order to clear my mind and sleep. Over the years I have always used in ear head phones which always used to last approx a year before needing replacing. Due to suffering with migraines I had daith piercings in both ears as a last attempt for a cure. As a result I can no longer wear in ear head phones and so moved onto the head bands (cozy phones etc). I had two different brands in about 3 months and both broke. I found they move around, stretch etc and despite what they say about the braided cable, they do kink. I had no idea that speakers for under pillows even existed and so thought I would give this a try. Although I've only used it for a few nights I am very impressed. I have had to turn up the volume on my MP3 player quite significantly but it is not on the max volume. I can hear the player perfectly through my pillow but would perhaps agree with others. This will be very dependent on your type of pillow. I think that the speaker is well made and sturdy so am hoping that it will last. I absolutely love the fact that the speaker has a very generous length of audio cable which means that your player can be put out of the bed and therefore prevents cable twists. The speaker seems to stay where it is placed. I was concerned it would move around, especially as I am a restless sleeper. It could probably be a bit better on volume and I haven't quite worked out what the button is for but overall for the price I think this is well worth it. To be able to have my player outside of the bed and waking without cables wrapped around my neck is such a plus. Ear phones can easily be dislodged/lodged. Headphones are hot to wear and stretch/move about. Under pillow speaker prevents all of these.
I use earphones on a night to listen to podcasts and audiobooks, it helps me sleep.
The trouble with earphones though is that it's easy to get tangled up in the wires and you have to switch ears every time you want to turn over.
I was dubious about the Pillow Talk Speaker at first for a few reasons. I thought it wouldn't be loud enough because it doesn't have it's own battery, it runs off of the phone battery in the same way the normal earphones do. I was also worried that the sound would be too tinny. None of these things are an issue.
The sound quality is great, with plenty of bass. You control the volume with your phone/device. My partner next to me can't hear it. I have mine on setting B, it seems to work fine.
I would recommend having a play around with the position of it under your pillow, for comfort and best clarity.
I definitely recommend this for people who like to listen to stuff in bed, and don't want to disturb anybody.
Does exactly what it says on the tin. I have a challenging sleep pattern, whilst my wife is totally bomb proof. I usually awake about 4 a.m. then doze for a few hours. I used to use ear buds....but if you fall asleep with your ear bud ear on the pillow, it can cause pain for days. This pillow speaker is perfect for my needs. You might need to move it around until you have it in just the right place but that isn't a problem. On the down side; it kept me company during election night 2015 but did nothing to improve my steadily increasing level of gloom and foreboding.
Brilliant! Bought this to replace a serviceable cheaper version where the lead had perished and gave up the ghost two days ago. This arrived the next day. Hubby very pleased. Says it’s a better shape under the pillow than the last cheaper version I’d bought him and the sound quality is very good. He plugs it into our Roberts radio and the volume is controlled using the radio. Nothing could be simpler. I do not understand the poor reviews. This is an outstanding product.
