This is a good cookbook for beginners or intermediate bakers. There are more complex recipes such as croissants and brioche but for the most part, good entry level pastries with very clear step by step instructions.
There are some errors in the book that if you bake often, you will notice. For example, there is no flour in the molten lava cakes to hold structure. If you were to look on her website, you will see the errors in the book that she has listed. Otherwise I would have given it 5 stars.
I've only made the cookie recipes so far but they've turned out well. The Molasses cookies and the Snickerdoodles were perfect. I like the method of mixing the batter and refrigerating it overnight before baking. It saves time and results in a better cookie. The oreos needed some tweaking as the dimensions for the log roll ended up making really oversized cookies. I cut the first batch into halves to make them more manageable....tasty though. I would definitely recommend this book.
The cookbook looks very good and the cover with the Sticky Sticky Buns is the reason I purchased it but have not had the time to try the recipe but hope to later in the month. The recipes go into a lot of detail and time but if they turn out as good as they look then they are worth it. TB
This is a serious book but I have to study it. I have not used any of the recipes yet and that is why I am giving 4 stars. I simply don't know but I am impressed. Obviously the author knows her baking.
All of the pastries I have baked came out great. My friends and I have not found any bad recipes yet in this book.
My only suggestion is for the author to work on ease of use. For example, pictures of the final product are great but please don't bisect a recipe that could fit on 1-2 pages. Put it after the recipe or in a small picture at the beginning.
Another suggestion is placing the next action at the beginning of the next bullet point don't put 2 actions in 1 bullet with an explanation in the middle. Its sloppy and hard to follow.
1) mix the confectionery sugar, butter, and salt into a bowl
2) add the milk to the mixture
Instead of: * Mix the confectionery sugar, butter, and salt into a bowl. This should be done to ensure consistency. Then add the milk to the mixture
It's hard to follow along when you write it without numbers and 3 actions in a single bullet. Many online sources are easier to follow along for this reason.
