I adopted a plant based diet for health reasons, but I also need to drop a few pounds. I’ve flirted with many dr/chef books and while all the science is sound, the one thing I never been thrilled about are the recipes. Finding chef AJ is a delight. I want to try all her recipes. I’m so pleased to,have finally found a set of recipes which will help me stick to this whole foods D plant based way of living.
I bought this book after reviewing her videos on YouTube. Unfortunately, this vegetarian, whole foods, no meat, way of eating does not work for me. There are just too many carbs, I just blow up like a balloon when I eat like this. The book is nicely laid out, and is very easy to read. There are a number of delicious recipes that I have incorporated into my diet. Delivery was perfect as usual, thanks to Prime Amazon, and the book itself, was in perfect condition. Brand new!
I read this book very quickly. It is very short. It discusses eating an unprocessed vegan diet. It basically suggests eating a vegan diet without the processed vegan food. That being said if you are looking for a quick (very quick) read on the subject this book will definitely do.
Unprocessed is an unusual cookbook. It provides a lot of personal information about Chef AJ and as I do like to follow her, I liked reading about her life. The oil, salt and sugar free recipes are easy to make.
If you're at all familar with Chef AJ You Tube videos, this book was a repeat of information I already knew about her. Plus, it appears that she has changed her way of eating quite a bit since this book was published. There are several ingredients in her receipes that she does not allow now (assuming you want to lose weight - which I don't). If you are interested in losing weight now, buy her newer book that was just released. I will not buy it because I believe it will be a review of what I already know. She is an engaging personality and knows how to market herself and everyone else that she has on her webcasts. To say she is passionate about her diet, weight loss, health and in general the whole-food plant based, SOS-free lifestyle is an understatement ! For me, to eat her way 100% would take some joy out of my life; I do not want to live so rigidly, but I am not a food addict and am not overweight. I am vegan 95% of the time and I do not beat myself when I make other choices, like alcohol or sugar, or if there is an egg in that cake, etc. I find her a hoot to watch and listen to though.
Lots of raw recipes loaded with nuts and stuff with a ton of dried fruit. Be aware AJs views have evolved over the years, so if you want what's more in tune with her diet now, that enabled here to lose 60 pounds and keep them off for 6 years, and the current science, get the Secrets to Ultimate Weight Loss. Still, her story is worth reading, and the recipes are good for occasional treats, if not for regular consumption.
A bit disappointed that there's more story than recipes, but still a good book especially if you are early on your path to a more healthy diet and way of life. She's a charmer and the recipies are good, clearly written and accurate. Wish there were more.
I like the idea of this book, not eating processed foods and not using salt, oil, or sugar. I have just started concentrating on a plant-based diet and this book is very helpful. Chef AJ also has a YouTube Channel where you can watch her make some of the recipes in the book. She and Julianna Hever - the Plant-Based Dietician - are fun to watch.
We have enjoyed Chef AJ's presentations on various video programs over the years. Her enthusiasm and humor are infectious. I bought this book after seeing a demonstration of and trying the sauce she used in the "Hale to Kale" YouTube video.
"Unprocessed" has a good variety of raw and cooked dishes. We have enjoyed all we have tried so far.
Her comments on the benefits of a plant based diet are thoughtful and help explain her journey to her current dietary practices.
I recommend "Unprocessed" to those who are already following a plant based diet and those who are "veg-curious".
