Simple, short, informative. Very enjoyable for me because it was waffle free. A great read for those keen to understand the basics.

I knew nothing about WordPress when I bought this book, having used Serif WebPlus exclusively for many years. However, Serif no longer supports WebPlus and its time to move on.
This book gave me a good basic grounding, without which I wouldn't have got anywhere. As it says, it is for a complete beginner - which is what I was. You will be able to piece together a basic website with the information in this book and that is why I have given it five stars.
I especially liked the step by step approach that this book takes as it suits my temperament. For me though, it is time to start looking for a more 'in depth' book as I want to learn more about writing the various procedures in PHP, for myself.

First of all let me agree with most other reviewers and compliment Sarah on producing this well-written and easy to follow short book on WordPress. Like most novices, I'd read that WP is the flexible future if I wanted to produce my own website without going to Geekdom and back and needing to learn and write in code. Before buying her download, I'd spent fuddled days reading WP Forums, watching videos and getting nowhere fast and thinking "Here we go again". Simple stuff needs to win in 2012.

I read a few reviews on here and Amazon.com and thought there's nothing to lose by buying this download. By following her book page by page, you very quickly get a basic website structure in place and up and running. Her common theme is "Don't ask - just do it!" and that's fine by me because it works and works well. The problem is that you will come away with a basic website/blog listing a couple of pages very quickly but you will have completely outgrown the book and are left wanting. For instance, it doesn't cover some very basic functions such as page sorting and this leaves your website page structure in an illogical order (eg a Contact page at the beginning rather than as the last page) and you're back to WP Forums and videos to fix it.

Her style of writing and teaching process are great but Sarah really does need to produce another 3 more advanced books quickly to take the student step-by-step on to better things. As it is today, I've nowhere to go except buy again from another author, start again and try and move upwards. And that's not what I need.

I built my first web site in 2001 using Microsoft Front Page. When I decided to build a biographical website this year(2018) I went back to Microsoft to use Front Page again. But this no longer exists. Microsoft works with Wix who charge a subscription of about £70.00 per annum. Over twenty years that's £1400! So I decided to buy a book and do it myself. The first book I purchased was Dr. Andy Williams book "1-hour WordPress 2018".

This is a big glossy book which is easy to follow. But it is American and directs you to use the author's recommended web hosts and registrars. Which is fine but maybe not the best deal. Anyway, I wanted a British book which is why I purchased "Build your own WordPress website". This easy to follow, but differs from the other books mentioned in this review because it is for small businesses. In this context, if you think you might want a business website - read the last chapter first. This is on E-commerce and emphasises the importance of SSL! In addition, this book reviews the important plugins on Security, Back-ups and Forms

If you don't want the business element you might want to read "WordPress to go" by Sarah McHarry. This book recommends 'site ground' as a web host. This comes with various freebies which you don't get with the other recommended web hosts.

Either way, if you can afford it I would recommend having two websites - one to experiment with and one as your proper site.

1.0 out of 5 stars Should not be on sale

This may have been a useful book for beginners when it was written. However it is now so out of date that it of little help and merely sows confusion. It does not even cover the current default editor which was introduced 2018. Such books should be withdrawn from sale once they no longer apply to the current product that their title suggests. Alternatively, the version of WordPress referred to should be clearly specified thus enabling the buyer to be fully aware of the books contents.
Thus a total waste of money, (thankfully only the kindle version), akin to buying a book on Windows and finding that it covered Windows 7 or XP!

I got introduced to wordpress by an adventure when I was looking into ways of building my own website without using a web designer. I started to build the site, but it was looking like that of an amateur, as I could not use/edit most of the dashboard functions. This then made me to look for a wordpress book on Amazon. I bought the first book "24-hour Wordpress Trainer" but this book did not really helped me with the way I would have wanted my site to look. I then went back to Amazon to look for other wordpress books, and them came across "Wordpress To Go" by Sarah McHarry. I decided to give the book a go, based on the reviews of people who have bought this book. As soon as I opened the book, I knew outright that this book will help me a great deal in achieving my dream of building at least a good wordpress site. I was not disappointed since Sarah began with how to buy a domain name and hosting of your site.
This book gave lessons on how to install wordpress, log in and out of wordpress which also include how to customise your wordpress site. I'm already used to all these and simply opened to the more needed area like "steps to a perfect website", "all about widgets", etc. Of most interest and importance to me are:
• How to install wordpress themes and customise it with regards to background, image, colour scheme, site title, header image and installation of useful plugins.
• Adding of images to wordpress site which she explained on how to do this from the "media library" and how you can upload images for future use in the media library. I have no idea on how to use this before until I read this wordpress to go by Sarah. Sarah also gave her opinion about adding images/photos to your pages/post as it literally makes your webpage look attractive and relevant.
• This book thought me how to add a video to my site, I did not even know that it was so simple and easy to install a video that you recorded by yourself or someone else until I read this wordpress book.
Other interesting things that I learnt in this book which though is for a beginner in wordpress and not for the advanced students include:
• How to add an image using a text widget.
• How to use a text widget to display a banner Ad.
• Sarah's opinion about custom menu and why it is good to use them. According to the author, custom menus are a relatively new feature of wordpress but it add a lot of flexibility and power to the design of a wordpress site.
• The author also shows how to create a primary, secondary menu and setting the home page of your wordpress site.
This book is really good for a beginner in wordpress and is fully loaded with so many examples and instructions on how to get started, be up and running within few hours of dedication and hardwork.

i have already created a blog and so therefore was really looking for a more advanced book but also wanted to make sure that I could do it again, this tells you from scratch how to build it how to get domain name and then design. i bought an expensie wordpress book from w h smith some time ago but it is hard to follow.
it tells you how to install word press but go daddy did all that for me . I'm now up to part two which should be useful as it is the technical issues that I want to understand more. installing widgets. I know how to do this but I am at a more advanced level and want to see how much I can learn. it is written in a very basic type and if you know nothing about wordpress this is worth getting.
i ould have done with this at the beginning but i just found out through trial and error. today i' going to go through the more advanced section.

This book is true to its title. It really does take you from zero to having your own website up and running.

What I like about it is that it assumes that although I am ignorant about WordPress, I am actually a reasonably intelligent person familiar with using a PC and modern software packages.

This means it does not insist on reproducing every single screen and explaining every single field in tedious (and usually very verbose) detail. Instead it strikes a very pleasing balance by explaining the things that are important and those that I am likely to get wrong and leaves the rest for me to explore.

As well as this book I also bought: "WordPress for Beginners: A Visual Step-by-Step Guide to Creating your Own... Dr. Andy Williams" which has the same qualities and I recommend for the same reason.

Although the two books cover much of the same ground I found that having two experts each explaining WordPress to me in their own words and with their own insights and views, made the learning process more effective. And any problems on my part could usually be overcome by referring to the other book.

Buy both!

As an almost total beginner with websites I have bought a domain name, purchased the hosting and wordpress management and I have begun to build my own website using this book. Still a lot (under statement) to learn but I love the learning. There is nothing you can't do if you put your mind to it. I think this is a great book to get you started and then practice, practice, practice. My first website is. wannabepotter.com if you wanted to see my WORK PROGRESS ! Udate: I changed my web host and haven't been able to get my website back online yet.

I've created three websites/blogs on Wordpress and every single time I seem to come up against new problems - either because I have a short memory or because they are changing the goalposts. Having bought Sarah McHarry's book I have managed to find a solution to virtually all these problems and I can't thank her enough. I didn't follow her tips on hosting, or on downloading the Wordpress software as I'd already established other sites on Wordpress, which seemed to me cheaper and simpler (though I may well be wrong), but otherwise, all you need to know about how to create pages and posts, and what the difference is, is here. I don't find Wordpress particularly intuitive but it's a 100 times easier now I have this book.
