To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
The quality of music and writing from Jason is excellent. Unfortunately the vinyl rendering of this album sounds as though it was mastered for CD and a copy of the master tape was used to cut the record - not as clear as other modern day records. Even after careful cleaning there is too much surface noise for a brand new record.
Musically, this is an incredible album. This review is specifically for the vinyl pressing with barcode 79450479974. This specific pressing has distortion actually pressed into the record at various points, and it makes the album completely unlistenable. I've heard that there are alternate pressings that don't have that issue, but I've yet to be able to get my hands on one.
We saw Jason Isbell in concert with some larger acts and thought he was pretty good. I decided to order this CD and add it to my collection. Upon playing the CD for the first time, it wasn't bad, but virtually all the songs were slow, somewhat somber tunes. It would have been nice for the songs to have been of various types, but obviously this is his style. While not bad, listening to a complete CD of this type tended to be somewhat depressing. I wouldn't buy it again.
Album color was pink, which was a nice surprise. I believe they used it to raise funds for breast cancer at one time. Unfortunately, the album was scratched in several places and would not play correctly. I returned it and will be ordering one from my local record shop.
