I already am a believer in reading to little ones...my 18 month old daughter has a library almost as big as mine and we read 20-30 books a day when she is home all day. That said...I still enjoyed reading this book and getting ideas about different reading techniques and what books are good for different ages. There are a lot of book lists in here for different ideas on books...more than the standard Goodnight Moon, Runaway Bunny, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, etc...so that was nice. I wish I had gotten this book when I was pregnant...may give it to soon to be first time moms as it would have been a nice book to have when starting a library for the little one. At this point...I already have a good idea of what my daughter likes and doesn't like. Still an interesting read though.
I bought this book because I was already convinced of the importance of reading with my child but as a first-time parent with a full-time job I wanted help identifying good authors and good books for different ages and stages to save time. There are a lot of really boring books for babies. This book did helped me to identify good starting points and it reminds me of the importance of specialist librarians. I'll be sure to ask my local children's librarian for help in future. The book also deals with e-books and digital media, and it has some good pointers on selecting those, too.
I haven't read this whole book, but ordered the copy that I am writing the review of after checking this book out of my local library and then realizing that it had many book lists in it that I wanted to be able to refer back to . this is a newer edition with a new author added and updated book lists. All of that is fine by me. what disappoints me is the much cheaper binding, cover and text weight. This is a book about books! People who purchase it are going to be booklovers andand text weight. This is a book about books! People who purchase it are going to be booklovers and want nice books, but this one is mnh Ioher quality than the first edition.
Since becoming a grandmother, I have read several recently written books on childcare, reading programs, age appropriate reading suggestions for parents and child. Times have not changed the common sense ways to begin to read to a child; what books to read, and high interest books. I am right on track. This is not to say that I am not learning a few good tips, I certainly am. This book is most helpful. Thank you.
