A cook book which makes me want to try every recipe in it! The book is full of lovely glossy snaps of all the delicious cakes, breads and other baked goodies from this American bakery and Cheryl and Griffith come across as so charming, that you wish this bakery was nearby!
Easy to follow recipes, although some of the US ingredients are harder to source, but a quick search on the internet led me to where to buy, or what to substitute with.
The Hummingbird Cake I baked at the weekend was the best I have ever tasted! Moist, light and delicious and the icing so so sweet. Can't wait to try all the recipes!
firstly let me preface thsi by saying i have many many many cookbooks, i love them, the back inthe day bakery cookbook is exactly as you would imagine if you had grown up in america in the 40's or 50's, however i didnt i grew up in ireland in the 80's... there unfortunatly isnt a great description of the origin or the basic of the recipies but they are easy to follow and the pictures are inspiring. warning the recipies are in american measures which can be a challange to convert but the recipies work and if you have some americans to visit they will appriciate the effort.
This is a lovely little retro cookbook. I have tried a few of the recipes and have been pleased with all of them. There is a good selection of sweet and savoury and nothing so far was too difficult to make. I would recommend this book to any enthusiastic bakers.
This is a great book filled with loads of Southern delicious treats. Many many many delicious sounding and looking recipes, and lovely details from the authors with background history of each dish. My dream is to set up a cute kitsch bakery just like these guys.
Great recipes, such a fun cookbook that really gets you in the mood for baking! Excellent photography involved and it comes with a conversion sheet to help you with measurement in imperial and metric units.
A fantastic book! Everything I've made so far has been a huge hit. A word of advice: they measure butter the european way, not north amaerican as I first assumed. Because of that, my first few attempts at recipes in the book were alright, but not what I thought they'd look like. Now I know better! Just in case you don't want to take the time to search, when the recipe calls for "8 Tbsps (1 stick)" that's equal to 1/2 a cup of butter. When it calls for "1/2 a pound (2 sticks)" that's one cup. etc etc. Worth every penny.
The strawberry cupcakes and the banana chocolate chip cupcakes are FANTASTIC! I first bought this for my Kindle, but after I realized I was smearing the Kindle with flour and butter, I bought the hardcover copy. It is so beautiful! I own a lot of cookbooks but this is one I pull from my shelf all the time. Absolutely love it and highly recommend!
I have had this book for about 6 months and have made many of the recipes in it. Every recipe I've tried has been delicious and easy to make. The directions are straight forward, the ingredients are listed in the order they are used and there are lots of photos to entice you try something. It's also nice that the ingredients are easy to find and are probably already in your cupboard/fridge. If you're looking for really tasty food, that people will devour and rave about, this is the book to get. This isn't the book to buy if you're looking for low fat, low calorie, dairy free, and/or health conscience recipes that will help you lose weight.
