To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
Though the size is good for a modest amount of items, it is extremely difficult to open the safe with the key. The waterproof seal requires that you push down and turn the key at the same time .... difficult for older people or arthritic hands.
I'm very unhappy with this item. I wanted to safely store papers and USB flash drives, as is shown in the pictures and mentioned in the description, so was surprised to find out from the small instruction manual that I was totally mislead. There's a warning NOT to store 'delicate items' directly inside this safe, because the insulation has a high water content that'll damage these items, so the company recommends putting such items in airtight containers. These are the same items shown in the safe in the pictures, NOT in airtight containers. And yet there's also a warning that the company isn't responsible for any damage or loss if you don't follow the recommendation. So they show examples of what NOT to do, don't mention anything before purchase about such important details, instead putting it on a paper that we all know many people don't bother reading, and only 'recommend' against following what the pictures show despite potentially catastrophic consequences. To me this is a big no-no.
Needless to say, these details alone make this safe useless to me, and I'd imagine many others also. The hassle of trying to find airtight containers the right size for whatever items I want to store safely, then having to remove and re-seal each container every time I need something, makes it very inconvenient. And then there's the maintenance: long-term storage isn't advised due to moisture buildup, so you MUST make sure to open it often to 'air out', or the contents and interior wall can develop a musty smell. This isn't even mentioned in the manual that comes with the safe, you have to go to their website's FAQ to find it! Another thing I found is that I wouldn't trust valuables from being stolen, considering the easy to smash plastic that contains the lock and handle. And the handle feels like it's just barely strong enough for the weight of the safe itself (it's plastic and bends as I'm lifting the empty safe). I wouldn't want to have a foot under it while carrying it with contents inside.
Had it not been for the moisture issues, I would've kept it and been satisfied. I wanted it for the fire and water safety, not the security, although that would've also been useful. Unfortunately this turned out to be a complete waste of my time, and an unnecessary hassle for Amazon, that could've been easily avoided had the item's listing not been misleading and lacking crucial information. I'll definitely be leery of Sentry products from now on.
I'm not recommending that others avoid Sentry products, just that they be cautious and make sure it suits their needs before wasting time and money, not to mention putting their valuables at potential risk rather than guaranteed safety.
Does not allow for USA 8.5 X 11" paper to lie flat. Will curl up edges on 2 sides of paper. Not well thought out in that respect. Purchased the medium 4.5" deep, not much can be stored in that space. Thick case and feels solid, just needs to be a few more inches deeper and 1/2" wider to accommodate pages to lay flat. For some might not matter. In my case, important docs and papers should not end up being curled. Poor design in that respect. Feels overpriced if it will not allow for common USA size as advertised and described.
Bought this safe to hold legal documents, will, POA, deed, etc. This model had a rubber gasket which refused to cling to its proper spot. While that was annoying, the real issue was that the interior was too small for letter-sized folders. If the seal worked, it might've been fine for smaller things--keys, passports, flash drives, a few photos--as the safe is quite heavy and seemed sturdy enough. An inch or two larger interior would have been perfect.
I bought it to put letter size documents in either manila folders or envelopes. They do not lie flat. The box itself looks heavy duty, but the latch is plastic and I imagine that it can be easily preyed open. There are so many reviews about the faulty locks, that I will be locking & unlocking the box for a few days before putting in my papers. This box wasn't expensive, but I expect a product on Amazon to work.
Bought this in December for my wife. Worked fine until recently. Could not, for the life of me, get it to open. Key turned, but nothing happened. Finally, with a great deal of force, I managed to get the safe opened, but it'll never be the same. It now resides in some landfill. Very disappointed. My first SentrySafe is still operational, and I have no complaints, but this unit was a waste of money.
Thankfully we've not tested it in a fire or underwater, but after a little over a year of being in the bedroom, it's cracked along the bottom. Felt sturdy, but it's clearly not. Cracked right after warranty ended.
Locking mechanism and handle are made of plastic. The safe will do the job of water and fire proofing but not a good security safe or being portable. who ever designed this was an idiot. im sure if you drop this, the plastic lock will break open and di i mention it is way to heavy for the plastic handle
