This is my first ever read on adoption. I had read through Mary Ostyn's other two books (a cook book and a book with advice for large families) and gathered she had adopted some children, and was intrigued, so decided I wanted to see what she had to say. It is very well written. Very honest, encouraging and practical too. I've since gotten my hands on about every book relating to adoption I can find, and time will tell what God has planned... I'll always appreciate that it was this lady who first brought it to my attention.
I am an adoptive mama with four children, and an avid reader. I review a lot of adoption/parenting related books, and was excited to see this new title! It was a pretty quick read chock full of great information. Mary Ostyn is a fantastic storyteller and I found myself smiling through a lot of the book, having been in many similar situations myself. She is very eloquent, and able to explain with ease all of the challenges that adoptive parents often face. She hits on all of the main points I would suggest new adoptive parents be aware of, especially attachment and trauma, and suggests the best resources for further reading. This is a perfect jumping off point for new adoptive parents and I can't say enough positive things about this book! In the future, I will definitely suggest that all waiting/new adoptive parents make this part of their adoption library!
Forever Mom is the book I wish I had when we began our adoption journey 14 years ago. It is the quintessential guide to preparing for this adventure. Whether you know someone who is adopting, you yourself are considering adoption, or you already have adopted and are looking for a valuable resource, this book is for you!
Told from the perspective of a mom in the trenches with 6 very different adoptive experiences, the book is chock-full of helpful and practical advice. Because Mary weaves her personal story in throughout the book, it reads less like a "how-to" book and more like developing a friendship with a mom who has been there, and is still there. I finished the book encouraged and strengthened for our own adoptive journey.
One more thought: The author is a Christian and she shares freely from her faith perspective, but the advice in this book is sound even if you don't share Mary's faith. If you own only one adoption book, this is it!
Mary Ostyn writes with profound wisdom straight from the trenches. She will encourage you, equip you, and inspire you.
I really enjoyed the insight she offers and the conversational tone. It was a quick read that opened up new points of information to help us through our adoption journey. Ostyn offers a frank, loving, and fun look into her family's daily life. I would definitely recommend especially to anyone that may be thinking about multiple types of adoption but hasn't taken the plunge into one particular type.
Her insight has helped us narrow down what we are looking for.
Lovely story and honest sharing of multiple adoption experiences for one family, but focused on international adoption and children from infancy to childhood. Not as applicable for newborn domestic adoption, but still a great perspective for those pursuing adoption and for supportive family & friends.
Started this book right after being matched, and now my little one has been home about 3 weeks. It has helped so much knowing that there are so many different ways for this to go. Her advice is practical and great!
I wish I would have read this before our son came to live with. There are so many helpful insights, nuggets of wisdom and practical tools that could have helped us side step many issues or at least given us comfort that the things we were experiencing were normal. I'm pretty sure that I will need to read chapters 7-8 a couple times to process and implement all the great suggestions!
As a soon to be adoptive mom, this both shared insight in to the journey ahead and kept it real, as well as provided encouragement, hope, and inspiration. It was a very enjoyable, easy to read story from one mom's heart to mine!
