5.0 out of 5 starsA lot of functionality for the price
Reviewed in Australia on 21 October 2019
I already had a controller set up and the USG adds a whole new dimension to the information I can access about my network. Bought it to replace a slow home router from my ISP. It's definitely faster, but most notable is the huge increase in performance using a VPN to access my home network from elsewhere. I wasn't aware the USG had an IPS (intrusion prevention system) until I installed it but that is definitely welcome. If you have a need for this, or are a tech enthusiast who wants a home network toy, it's excellent value.

1.0 out of 5 starsDoes not support cloud ubiquiti controllers, requires a local ubiquiti controller
Reviewed in Australia on 31 August 2021
Had an inconvenience with this item, where it was unresponsive for several hours after plugging in — the ethernet lights would flash, however the reset button was unresponsive and the center light never illuminated. After hours of debugging and several power cycles, it finally decided to start becoming responsive - the center light start blinking and eventually became solid (after about 5-20 minutes) and the reset button would trigger the LAN2 orange light flashes. Perhaps this delay in responsiveness was a faulty unit.

After that inconvenience the item was completely undetectable by the local controller, or by direct access via the IP, despite DHCP and manual IP configuration. Connecting this to the NBN box was futile, as that requires PPPoE authentication which requires configuration first, so connected it to the modem however that required changing the modem's gateway from 192.168.1.1 (which the USG is hardwired for) to 192.168.5.1. This then enabled to the local controller to detect it.

Unfortunately, the local controller is the only option for the USG. There is no way to have it adopted by a cloud controller, such as UI/UNMS/UBNT/UISP (whatever they are calling it these days). The local controller also only runs on Windows or x86 Ubuntu, which we do not have on this network with only x86 Arch Manjaro and ARM Ubuntu installations, furthermore, the point of ordering this device was to allow remote management of the network, which a local controller does not allow for.

In the end, I would have been much better served by the EdgeRouter X, which we have already deployed several times over with success. The EdgeRouter X was able to be setup instantly without any IP nonsense, and allows easy management by the Ubiquiti cloud controller option.

I can only recommend the USG if you are using it in combination with the Ubiquiti Dream Machine hardware or the Ubiquiti Cloud Key hardware, however the Dream Machine already matches the functionality of the USG and then some, and the Cloud Key plus USG combination would just be a more expensive option than the EdgeRouter. As such, the USG is only worthwhile if you want to use local controllers with expensive hardware.

2.0 out of 5 stars Basic compared to PFsense and no parental controls
Reviewed in Australia on 5 June 2020
I purchased it elsewhere. I have USG+2AC-Pros and controller running on one of the LVMs on proxmox. I did not do my research and got caught to nice graphics etc. USG is a basic set up. Even up to now no good way to manage OpenVPN in this (so I have mine still running on synology NAS). No parental controls (Synology routers way ahead). Community is crying for these for many years and unifi has no response. Only way is to use terminal and muck around. Even the usage statistics unifi controller software does not allow you to slice and dice the way you want and cannot be taken out (export) to do further analysis say to a time series database

Unifi wifi gear is good but not USG. Better to get an pfsense or opensense device where you can do all what is missing. I cannot understand why when opensource products have this much features so called leading networking solution provider cannot do a decent job

2.0 out of 5 stars This is not really ready for release ....

Decent product with an extensive feature set, however, it is nothing like other Unifi devices. This is an unfinished product - to make proper use of it, you will need to resort to command line configuration.

Other routers do it much better. Only reason to buy this is to fill in the greyed out boxes in the Unifi controller software. Once the novelty has worn out after about 2 minutes, you’ll wonder why you bought this and went through all the hassle?!

A lot of features missing from this device, if you are looking for a decent gateway / firewall I would keep looking.

Much of the expected functionality is missing or needs to be done at the command line by logging in over ssh.

Documentation isn’t complete and you will end up having to follow forum posts to achieve many things that should be standard on a firewall.

DPI results are nonsense too.

Integration with other UniFi kit is nice, but that’s the only positive really.

I went back to using pfsense after a few weeks.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wannabe good and ends up mediocre

I got this Gateway, PoE switch and WiFi 6 Lite antenna to replace Netgear Nighthawk X6 equipment, which was poor on security and even worse on stability. I read some good reviews of the Ubiquiti and UniFi equipment, but it's all a bit shady I think. The quality of the hardware seems good, most components are metal rather than plastic. The installation and setup was ok, even though I still think they need to prioritise on-device firmware and interface over their cloud key, which is a separate hardware unit.
After half a year of usage and troubleshooting, the experience is pretty poor. I get the following problems:
1. WiFi device is unable to access WiFi - no changes made at all, it just happens after 3-7 days of runtime.
2. WiFi signal fluctuation - same spot, antenna hasn't moved an inch, yet the signal strength has decreased by up to 50%. Checking the channel occupancy and possible interference shows no changes from day before.
3. Restart of all equipment is needed to restore all WiFi device's connections
4. Restart takes roughly 5-10 minutes, rather than 1-2 for most other home equipment.
5. There's some significant heat being generated by the Gateway even when there's barely any traffic.

I manage Cisco equipment at the office professionally, and I've never seen issues like these to happen there. Yes there's occassional restart needed for firmware upgrade or when things go wrong and restore from backup is needed, but I expected some level of stability, and not problems on a weekly basis.
I'm seriously disappointed in Ubiquiti, and will be looking elsewhere in the future.

2.0 out of 5 stars Such a disappointment

I had high hopes, got all the UniFi stuff and had dreams to make a cool home networking setup...
It turns out that USG was a big disappointment, using it to connect to the ONT directly (FTTP broadband) was easy, but the connection speed was really bad: from 850-920mbps using BT router to around 150mbps using the USG (tested using cables).
The Wi-Fi AC was another disappointment, but that’s another review!
My conclusion, it is certainly cool to have, but honestly, it adds more problems (and money) than what it actually solves. My house is big and even then my conclusion was this is an overkill.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very poor considering reviews

Requires a PC or extra hardware/unifi controller to run the fancy GUI. GUI looks great but not much use if the PC isn't on. GUI requires java and the Mac version just installs and crashes. Basic stat's like the rate of your interface not shown, just total stat's added per protocol.
The IPS/IDS looks good and should really be on by default, turning it on slams performance, so best
off. Throughput dropped by 30-40%. maxing at around 100Mbs.
Firewall config is woeful, not logical and built in rules you can't modify. Locked out the gui playing around with the firewall.
Documentation is poor and out of date, frequent references use different terminology on the gui vs the online docs.
I guess this is a firewall for those people who want to see the traffic and allow everything anything out of your LAN. It's a router with stats, so overpriced.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous software makes setup harder than it should be

30 years in IT, some of that project managing enterprise-level network infrastructure installs and I’ve never seen a switch that needs to be “adopted” by a ridiculous piece of software (controller). Heed the other 1-3 star reviews, this is a faff to install. Even something as simple as SSH is made more difficult by Ubiquiti. Networking does not have to be this hard, especially for SOHO devices. Avoid, far better out there.

It would otherwise be a good product but mine started being unreliable about 1.5 years on, randomly dropping connections and stopping DHCP requests.

Did not arrive with UK plug, which is a legal requirement. Not sure what I'm supposed to do with this 🤔
