One of the pros of an idea like this is that you can save money in the long run by avoiding having to buy new headphones if the various elements that make up headphones fail or degrade.
One genuine con of this specific product is that while the ear cups are replaceable... the actual bit your ear sits on... where the noise comes from, is not. I would have liked if the backing was able to be replaced and included but it isn't. One obvious con is the price... £60 can buy you an entirely new pair of very decent quality headphones... thus not solving the problem it can easily solve, I would happily pay £20 for this, but £60 is really pushing the limits as to what I'd pay for it.
I like the leather earcups but the noise isolating tags start to give me a headache after a while so I reverted to the standard tags. The microphone is good quality and to be honest I don't even notice the headband so that is probably a good thing too. I would probably wait until it's on sale before buying it though as the retail price is hard to justify (especially given you just shelled out for an expensive pair of headphones).
EDIT: After further use I have gotten used to the feeling of the faux leather ear cups and use them often for more passive noise canceling. However, I still hardly ever use the side caps for this headset as that does throw off the sound. And of course the price is there too. After 6+ months of use though, I would recommend and buy again.
OLD: The faux leather feels great and the installation of parts is super easy. I got compliments on the mic upgrade when I changed out the boom, so that is a plus. However, it is hard to say that I would use the ear cups and caps very often. There is a bit of "suction" to them as you put them on, which is fine. And they block the noise out quite effectively as well. The problem comes with how much noise is blocked from each ear. The right ear cup is superb with the noise blocking. The left side (side with mic) is lacking. I'm not sure if it is because of the hole in the side of the ear cap (which has rubber around it) that is the problem or not. Either way the right ear seals off more noise than the left, leaving the listening experience unbalanced. Personally, if I was to use these for a long term session, I would have to turn down the volume on the right ear cup in order to try and balance the sound. I'm not sure if that makes sense, but it was a little disappointing when I got them.
If this kind of thing doesn't bother your, than you should be fine. I will warn you though that it is noticeable. On top of that, the faux leather ear cups are not as comfortable as the original fabric ones (which are amazing, probably the best I've ever had). I plan to use these for when I want full immersion into a game, but will first have to create a sound profile to balance the left and right volume. In that sense, this mod kit is more of a situational use than everyday use for me.
IMO it isn't really worth getting this for the large price tag. Yes the mic is nice, and the noise canceling is okay, but the original ear cups are so much more comfortable and don't give you the "balance issue." I could see this being useful if it came with the headphones from the start, but they don't. Some will have more use for this product than others depending on their situation and desired use.
The head band is better than the one that came with the head set.
the ear pieces are for sure better than the ones that came with the headset. The ear pieces in the mod kit adds more boost and bass, and the audio sounds even better.
Now a lot of people say the microphone in the mod kit sucks, but I find it sounds slightly better, and it does cancel more background noise and you might have to talk louder with this microphone, but you can easily change that in the astro command center and set the microphone on streaming mode and you don't have to talk as loud for the microphone to pick up your voice. I prefer the mod kit microphone as it sounds slightly better, and it doesn't pick up me breathing in the microphone.
Only thing I hated was the mod kit closed back tags, I don't know how this works, but the closed back tags in the mod kit loses a lot of bass in the audio. The audio sounds pretty bad with the closed back tags. Plus when having the headset closed back, I would assume your ears will hurt playing longer than one hour. I played using it for 20 minutes and took the head set off and my ears were just hurting. I don't know how anyone can play with closed back head sets.
