To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
I use this for my PVR for the security system - really is a seamless integration. Once I linked the unit with my wifi router, its a simple matter of plugging in the Ethernet cable to whatever you want on the net - voila - IP address almost instantly. Very happy with the results of this unit!
Dec 2018 Update Changed Ratting to two star. Seems that this drops connections all the time and needs to be rebooted. Not acceptable for a device of this nature. Lets see what the manufacturer will do anything about it.
Extremely slow. Not at all suitable for modern use. Price, under these circumstances, is beyond exorbitant. "Abusive" is the word I would use. Disconnects & reconnects inexplicably and has exactly zero troubleshooting tools. Flying completely blind.
Update to my previous review. The adapter worked well for 13 months. Never lost the connection but when I had to reconnected due to new router/Wireless setup the WPS button stuck/broke and would not release and no connection could be made.Should have lasted longer than this? I will be replacing it with another brand.
The IOGEAR GWU627 Universal WiFi Adapter was easy to set up, the WPS worked great, but after a week, it will not respond. It will not connect to my wireless connection, with the WPS and I tried to do a manual installation with no WPS, no go. I updated the firmware, still nothing. While it worked, my WiFi to my TV was flawless, but I seemed to have gotten a bad one
I purchased this gadget to allow a Tivo Mini to connect to my wireless network since they only support ethernet connections. It works, but it presented two problems: 1) That little device would get incredibly hot. As in too hot to touch. That is definitely not good for electronics in general. 2) It would not stay connected for more than 45-60 minutes. Tivo would just complain that it was disconnected. Weird part was that sometimes it was not a 100% disconnect. So I chuck it to some sort of incompatibility between this device and the Tivo.
Now, I have an electrical engineering degree and have been a software developer for 25 years, so I guess I could have troubleshooted this weird interaction to get a better insight. But, I just purchased a TP-Link AC750 Travel Router, put it in "client mode" and it just works. Rock solid. So... problem solved.
Unlike their previous model, the GWU627, this GWU637 model has some design defects. As you can read in many of the other reviews, this unit will heat up, cause a hang to occur, and then resetting it is your only option. This is up to and including firmware CL2x2-N01-3464.I07 in April 2020. The only reason I'm not giving this 1-star is because there's a warranty. I'll likely chuck this in the trash and stop buying iogear's products. Power cycling the unit causes it to start back up, and back normally until the next hang event.
The GWU627, the earlier version, works perfectly fine in exactly the same application without any of the associated trouble. I'd suggest locating an older version, at probably 1/4 the price, on an auction site.
