For someone who has a pair of wooden wings above her bed, a small collection of birds’ nests, and two birdbaths in the garden, how could I not happily immerse myself in this delightful novel?
I loved reading this novel, turning each page and dipping into each little section, fragments of Jen’s life as her personal story slowly unfolded. I enjoyed the subtle references to misogyny and Jen’s eventual realisation of the futility of continuing her relationship with Craig who soon re-partners with a younger woman and procreates swiftly.
I loved the way the novel was structured into segments illustrating events in Jen’s life, her love of birds and her attempts at being self-sufficient. It was a satisfying read, as slowly resolutions unfold and old memories are symbolically cast off. Jen, the main character, comes to understand why her father left and how and why his efforts to locate her had failed. The mystery of the missing children is revealed bringing relief to everyone in the town and their families. The heavy and constant rains cleanse the town and its memories, encouraging new growth.
Moments I especially loved were the art sessions with Henry and the building of the nest in the forest.
I found this novel a joy to read from the first page to the last and enjoyed Jen’s company immensely.
